ignition switch??

i have an 83 f150 302. i went out to start the truck up and nothing. no click nothing. the lights work and so does the radio. when i turn the key the headlights dont dim so i think it might be the ignition switch. or a dead battery. havent got a chance to jump it or test ityet though. its raining out.
also could the neutral safety switch cause this? cause once last week i went to start it and nothing happened but i put it in neutral and it fired up. turned it off and tried to start it in park and nothing, put it in neutral and it fired up. but that problem never happened again.
thanks

head lites dont dim; batttery is charged
nss did not work right last week
bet it is not working this week
jumper from hot side of starter solenoid to the S teminal
if it turns over then problem is in switch or nss.

Yes, jump #3 to #5 in the diagram below and see if it will turn over. If you put the key in run, and it will probably start.

Get under the truck on the passenger side, and look at the side of the tranny. Where the lever comes out of the side there should be the plastic switch with the wires coming out. If you unplug the switch , and make a jumper and jump the two red/blue wires in the plug coming from the trucks wiring, that will bypass the neutral safety switch. If you have a couple of other wires going to the switch, they are for the backup lights.

Sorry about that. Yes, it's the driver's side. Two of the wires are the neutral safety, and the other two are the back-up lights.

ok cool. and once i jumper the two wires together, it completly bypasses the nss so any other problems are with the igntion switch or something else?

Yes. Jump the red/blue wires together. One of the red/blue wires comes from the ignition switch, and the other one leads back out to the red/blue on the solenoid.

ok i did that. seems to be starting good now. but it was starting before i did it, so dont know if it worked. one thing, should i be able to start the truck in D or R now? cause thats what i thought the nss did. cause i can only start in park an neutral. i just wanted to make sure i did it right.

You should be able to crank it in any gear with the NSS bypassed.

ok. well i wired a switch from battery to "s" terminal on solenoid. if i was to wire a keyless igntition what else would i need to wire? i'd have to have 12v to the coil and choke wire, but how do you power alternator and accessories(radio, lights, etc...)

The original ignition switch is pretty involved, with different contact sections to it. All the wiring is right there at the switch. Why do you want to bypass the switch? It's not going to be easy, and may require 2 or 3 switches and definitely a wiring diagram.

If you think it's in the ignition switch area, you may have the famous broken pot metal piece in the column. If you want to try this, take the cover off the steering column. On top of the column there is a rod that moves back and forth with the key. Turn the key to start, and while holding the key, take some pliers and help the rod by pushing it toward the dash. If this makes it start, then you do have the broken piece in the column.
