'99 F-150 starting running rough this morning and the CEL was on but at times it would blink. Went to the parts store to have the codes read. 1. Cyl. 1 misfire 2. O2 sensor bank 2 sensor 1`fail 3. Bank 2 running lean 4. was something about an auxilary emission controller
Where is the best place to start? O2 sensor or problem with spark plug on Cyl 1?
How many miles on the truck. '99 will/should around 100k correct?
When was the truck tuned up?
Plugs
wires
coolant
belts
air and fuel filter
etc.
O2 sensor maybe an area to address, but if the truck needs servicing do the needed items too.
A stuck EGR valve or valve problem will cause the truck to run poorly and may cause a lean code (MAY that is).
O2 sensors need to be checked/adressed at the 100k mile mark.
1. Post the EXACT fault codes, not a generic description, in the exact order the scan tool issued them. Yeah, it's important.
2. Identify your engine. Certain ones have patterns of failures and no one here is psychic.
3. Troubleshoot and repair the misfire first. It is the most critical and will cause other problems as the computer tries to work around that fault. The misfire is the reason that the CEL is flashing. Your owner's manual has more details.
4. ALWAYS reset the computer after making a repair so that it must relearn operating parameters. Failure to do so will have you chasing gremlins that don't exist.
5. O2 sensors do not automatically die at 100k or at any other mileage mark. If they're bad, replace them. If they're not bad, there's no reason to spend the money. Mine, for example, still work fine (nice, clean switching as viewed on a graphing scan tool) at 160K miles.
Provide needed details and you will be coached through the diagnosis and repair.
