Question 97 Explorer - Multiple CEL Codes

1997 Explorer, 2wd, 4.0L V6, 143k miles, automatic transmission.

Yesterday morning, I cranked the truck to let it warm up, and after it cranked, it was very hesitant, stumbling, coughing, hacking, bouncing...just wasn't running smooth like it normally does. Then the check engine light came on. When I got in and started down the road, it ran fine. Had no other problems the rest of the day, but the CEL remained on.

Stopped by Auto Zone to get the codes read and this is what it said:
P0300 - Multiple Misfires
P0171 - Lean Bank 1
P0304 - Cyl 4 Misfire
P0305 - Cyl 5 Misfire
P0306 - Cyl 6 Misfire
P0174 - Lean Bank 2

Cleared the codes, and CEL did not come back on. No troubles on the way home or today.

Do you think it was some bad gas, or do I have other problems?

Replaced the driver side O2 sensor within the last year, also new plugs and wires within the last year. Put new IAC on within last 2 months.

Those codes indicate that you have a major intake leak that is worse on Bank 2 (Driver Side). You will end up having to pull the upper intake and replace the gasket. This is a common failure area. The lean codes indicate that the computer is trying to compensate for the leak, but that under certain conditions, its adjustment reaches a certain cutoff point and the injector pulse width has reached a preprogrammed limit. The misfire codes on that bank indicates that despite it best efforts, the bank 2 leak is bad enough that is it capable of triggering a lean misfire.

If you ignore this kind of problem, there is some potential for damage. If the engine is leaning out under load, it can damage the engine.

Thanks for the reply. So you think it could be that serious of a problem, even though it only happened 1 time and has ran fine ever since? That really scares me!

I have a 97 and sometimes get multiple random codes.

I have connected my laptop to the OBDII and monitored the sensors..found all to be within spec.

I would reset and monitor, if the codes reactivate, time for further investigation.

In the meantime run some seafoam or a good injector cleaner through the system.

You can check for intake leak with a spray bottle (water) or with a propane source.
