I have a '92 f150 300CID 4x4 with an E4OD tranny. When going down the road maintaining speed, the transmission all of a sudden starts "free wheeling",!!! It acts as though you have put it in neutral. Let off the gas for a second or two and everything is back to normal. When it is not doing this, I cannot detect any slippage at all. Transmission fluid and filter have been changed to see if this would correct it but it had no effect at all.
Anybody ever had this happen before or have a clue as to what causes it?
The MPLS (Probably wrong) Shift position switch .Is going bad . Its on shaft on drivers side of tranny the shift cable hooks onto it.
Block wheels Remove cable remove shift arm take 2 bolt out of switch will come off. Try cleaning it (blow out) and make sure when tranny is in neutral
the lines on switch r adjusted right. One on housing and one on shaft that is .
But probably a no fix.
I keep used ones on shelf off my parts trucks . But to find one is a pain .
Easy to replace but switchmay be $ .

My E4OD transmission neutrals out intermittently in Overdrive and 4th gear. It seems to be very erratic, sometimes you can make a 300 mile trip witout any problems, and other times it will neutral out 3 or 4 times on a 10 mile trip. When the problem is not present it works perfectly. What could cause this problem?
The most likely cause for the problem you describe is a bad manual lever position sensor (MLPS). The MLPS is also called a transmission range sensor (TRS). The problem is mainly related to water intrusion from a poor connector seal. Ford sells an update kit that comes with a new Range sensor, and an updated connector with an improved seal. The Ford part number for the update kit is F5TZ-7A247-AA. Your local Ford Dealer will sell this for around $100.00. You can order this sensor update package from us for $75.00.
I thank you guy's! Instead of posting an already asked question with the SAME problem, I found it in a search in this forum.
I have not been to the site for awhile, but good to know I still get the same results as alway's, the right answer.
