2003 6.0 PSD and 30K miles. The truck was shut down for the night with 15 degrees on the weather ticker and 10 hours later it was -4 Fahrenheit. The truck started up almost as if it was a new truck off the lot. Last winter and this winter, I used to have problems with cold starts and I'm very stubborn when it comes to using the block heater. I rarely use the block heater in the '91 7.3 diesel and it starts without any problems.
This past week, 1/17, the computer was flashed to the most current program. The previous program was the buzzing of the injectors after shut down. The stealership didn't charge for the reflash.
The second item were new batteries. The stock were replaced with Die Hard batteries that have 875 CCA's. The stealership said the stock batteries were down to 385 and 410 CCA's. Irregardless, they were due for replacement this season and they weren't going to be a stealership money maker.
Lastly, I don't have the stealership do the oil changes. I normally use Rotella 15w - 40 year round. Time for a change during the winter to Rotella Synthetic 5w - 40 since I can't find any 10w - 30 diesel rated oil around here except from the stealership.
I know all the above changes had a big part in the cold start circumstances and the big test will be tonight after a daily high of 10 degrees and a low of -8 tonight.
