Also I believe there would be a 12k mile and 1 year warranty on the ford replacement part... Something I could check into tomorrow.

I had to get a new one at work on a truck at work once because it was acting up. I may be wrong but i thought they said the odometer ran through the gem module since its electronic. The older ones dont because there not electronic odometer. I think that was the changing point for the vsm to the gem but i dont know. Point is i belive they had to download the miles off the truck and install it in the new one. Im thinking a salvaged one off an 02 wouldnt work since its not going to be the same amout of miles. I could be wrong tho this was a couple years ago.

have you checked the door-ajar sensor in the door? they're a pain to get to but only about $10 from the stealership. they will cause your door ajar light to come on. i've replaced 2 on 2 different ford super duty's.

Exclamation 2002 problem

I also have the same problem in my 2002. I think Ford needs a recall on this since it seems so prominent in this year. I was told that there is a couple of different wiring schematics for this VSM and that Ford quoted me at $400-$1000. Ridiculous!!!!!!!!

The auto headlights don't work.
The door locks will not auto lock at 5mph.
The radio stays on with the key out and the door is open.
The alarm works intermitantly.
The door ajar light will not come on with any door open.

Off the top of my head guzzle, jverba and myself have had the VSM replaced. Upon researching the Electrical Systems and Wiring Forum I found three other guys that replaced their VSM. This is where I noticed that all six of us had 2002 modle trucks! Coincidence?! I'm not saying its an epidemic, just sharing my thoughts.

Bumping this old thread...My keyless entry started working intermittent (for three months) has since failed completely. Its been two years since it hasn't worked at all. I dont have any door ajar, electric door lock(by hitting the buttons on the door), or any other of the symptoms the this VSM proposes. I went to the dealership and bought two new remotes, programmed them and upon exiting the "programming mode" my truck doesn't remember the code I set for the fobs. So, I dont have fob issues nor any other VSM failure symptoms, does anyone have knowledge of a relay for the keyless entry or any other ideas?? I'm dreading spending $250 on the VSM/programming from the dealership if it isnt going to fix my issue.

Thanks for your time gentlemen!

bump

my 2002 X has almost all the symptoms outlined above. anyone have a part #?

if I can grab a used one for cheap, I'll chance it. Dealerships out here charge crazy money for things like this. I'd be looking at $200+ for just the privilege of plugging in

My 02 has had the VSM issues for two years now. I finally had my truck scanned by a buddy of mine and as I thought the VSM is bad. It turns out that the VSM modules are on national back order. Last time I check with the stealer ship there computer was saying the VSM should be available at the end of March. Not holding my breath, I've been waiting for about 3-4 months now.

The new module is now going for over $200.00 at my stealer ship here in Nevada. With the help from our friends here on FTE I went to AutoNation Ford White Bear lake Parts (previously Tousley Ford) and they quoted me
$169.00 Just thought I'd share this info

Good luck to all on your VSM issues. I just ordered a VSM from my local Ford Stealer this week. Part # 4C7Z15604AC It was $175.63 + tax. Also on back order possibly into August 2014. This is a very frustrating issue. I my truck is also 2002 CC Lariat 4x4. The service shop said they would do the flash programming of the VSM for $105...we'll see.

Looks like I may have found my issue in multiple threads here, but I’ll pose my questions anyway. I too have a 2002 cc lariat 4x4. FOBs stopped working 10 plus years ago. I had tested different FOBs. I believe I took it to the dealership and they stated it was the VSM. Did nothing about it at that time. Everything else seems to work right including the locks from the door switches. I have been contemplating adding a remote start for some time and finally got around to sending it to a shop thinking that they could just tap into the door switch to work around the VSM. Seems that is not the case as the installer states the VSM needs to be functioning for the remote start system to work the auto locks too. I will call the dealer in the morning but sounds like these are not available. Any thoughts on options? Can I buy a used one and have the dealership reprogram? Is there a way to fix the current VSM for a single module?

Well the good news is I found someone who sells the VSM. From my understanding I need to replace and test. Sometimes they work as is, most of the time it will need to be programmed by dealer. Part is on the way so I should have more information around the middle of next week.
