Dually wheel oil seals
Dually wheel oil seals
I just purchased a 2000 F350 dually with the open 3.73 rearend and 97k miles. The left wheel or hub seal was leaking, and when I removed it, it was a loose fit on the axle tube. The seal had a rotating part that stayed stationary on the axle tube (although it was a loose enough fit to allow a large leak) while the outer part rotated with the hub. In other words, if you were holding the seal in your hand, you could spin an inner sleeve inside the seal. I've never seen a seal with a moving part like this before, and the new ones I purchased from the dealer were the conventional fixed type. A repair shop had replaced the seals, all the brake pads, rotors, and e-brake shoes about ten weeks prior, and the prior owner had driven only a few hundred miles since. I assume they installed the wrong seals? The left bearings were pitted and didn't rotate smoothly in the cups and there was a small amount of loose metal particles. Bearings on opposite side seemed fine and it's seal didn't leak quite as bad. Should I be concerned about damage to the differential and related bearings from low oil level or metal particles from damaged wheel bearings? It was just over a quart low. Has anyone seen these weird seals before? If the brake pads and e-brake shoes were saturated with gear oil, would cleaning with brake cleaner and a light sanding be sufficient, or would it be manditory to replace them after oil saturation? Thanks for any advice.
those seals are common i the big trucks. i would go through the bearings and seals o both wheels. the lubes from the wheels dosent migrate back up into the differentualfill the axle and you should be good to go. the duallys call for sythetic in the axle.
