Thumbs down 02 rotten fuel mileage

hey my dad recently traded his 99 6 speed powerstroke ext. cab short bed with 3.73 gears on an 02 crew cab short bed with 3.73's. with them tuned the same (60 hp), and no catalatic conv. on either truck he could easy get 20 mpg mixed driving with him driving, but not with me driving lol. well, his 02 gets only about 14 at best with same driving. thats pretty rotten imo. i get 16.5ish with my 97 4.10's auto ext. cab lwb on 90 hp lead footed with intake and straight pipe.

what do you all get, is there some reason you can think of as why the drop?

Did he switch from a stick to an auto? An auto likes to rev higher rpm's with the same amount of pedal. Try keeping it under 2,000 rpm's all the time and see what the mileage does.

If that's not it maybe try cleaning the EPB sensor tube. I get a hair under 20 in my 02 6 speed.

i towed my truck on our 7,000# trailer behind dad's truck 50 some miles today, then hauled just the trailer probably 20 miles then hauled an 800 pound role of hay back home, which was 30 miles back. then some in town empty driving tonight. 126 miles, 13.39 gallons of diesel= 9.45 mpg!!!! that sucks, and thats with clean air filter, only 15 minutes max idle time, and on stock setting!!. my truck with 4.10's gets that turned up 90 hp blowin smoke runnin much harder than i ran his today with 22,000+pounds will get 10mpg. no raw fuel smell, no drips, not alotta smoke either! any ideas????

Clean and tighten all intercooler and spider boots, low boost levels will decrease fuel mileage. My 02 gets 16mpg avg. not towing

Heres a better explaination, you will have the intercooler pipes coming into the y portion of the spider pipe then there are 2 other pipes angled down with orange boots that go to the engine.

I'm assuming you are hand calculating the milage. I normally get 15 around town and 18 highway at 75 mph.

How many miles on it? Many folks see improved MPG after cleaning the Exhaust Back Pressure Sensor & Tube.

All i expect and usually get around town in my truck (pretty similar to his) is 13.5 ALmost always dead on hand-calculated every time, towing or not. Highway is better, just don't do enough of it to find out how much. Last I saw 17 on the highway with ULSD. 19 with Low sulfur diesel!!!! Get rid of the earth bunnies so we can get our mpg's back!!!!!!
