429/460 Header clearance
I need to figure out if the fenderwell exit headers will fit. Why? Well I have a 69 429 in my 76 F-250 4x4 that I mounted using the original 360/390 engine mount perches, then drilled a set of 360/390 motor mounts to fit the 429. (got the idea from here!) It fit good with manifolds (76 F250 sc/460 2wd).
My concern is the height of the exhaust ports-Im not sure if the engine is sitting higher or lower than what may be required for such headers.
Or, should I just consider chassis exit headers and keep it all within the frame rails?
I've had vehicles with jimmy rigged headers before, and what a pain! The engine is built to breathe, straight up roller t/c, cam specs; SAE Dur. 293int/303exh and .518"/.544" lift, C9 heads ported, weiand 8012 intake and 850cfm. carb. Ran this engine with headers in another truck, and after tuning for the manifolds-it seems to have less power, IMO.
Other details; C6 with married transfercase-np205 from a 79 bronco, and the 79 style x-member to hold it in. I removed the old x-member that used to go underneath the transmission and the original trans x-member and left the huge x-member in for the divorced trans case setup it used to have. Still has the "highboy" springs, 3" body lift, hp dana44/dana60 w. the 4.10:1 gear setup and 35" muds. Basically converted to a 79 drivetrain sorta except the old 76 frame seems to have more meat to it.
Its been a great truck, tho I want headers-I know they can be a pain, but they sound nice and compliment power. Btw, if I had to do it again, I would find a 78/79, lift it and jam a bigblock in it, hehe.
Perhaps someone with the L&L mounts could measure from an ex. manifold bolt to the top of the frame and let me know...
Any ideas will help, thanks a bunch! awesome forum!!
