It was -27 C here this morning and I could hardly steer my truck. I don't think I will be even able to turn the wheel if it gets colder. I have a 75 F-250 crew 4x4 with the power assist and closed knuckle Dana 60.
Does anyone run winter oil or synthetic in the steering? I would like to try it but don't want to have to switch back and forth a couple times a year. Are there any problems if the lighter oil is left in all year?
Would it just be the oil in the closed knuckle stiffing things up? This is the first winter I have had the truck and don't know what the PO would have in it for oil.
I would first flush the fluid you have now, and use true power steering fluid. The transmission fluid of today is not the same as the transmission fluid recommended back in 1976.
