Hi all, I have never worked on an explorer, but my buddies just will not start, it is cracking just fine, and getting spark, so I am guessing the fuel pump. It is not the inerta switch as that was already checked. My question is does anybody know a way to check and see if the fuel pump is working or not on these without hooking up a fuel pressure test or dropping the tank right away? Should the fuel pump be audible? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Fuel pump should be audible. Get a stethoscope and poke at the tank, that might help.
You could hook up an ammeter in line with the fuel pump and see if it is drawing current when it should. You could also hook up an ohmmeter and see if the fuel pump has continuity. A voltmeter at strategic locations in the fuel pump circuit can tell you where/when voltage is being applied.
If the fuel pump circuit checks out electrically, the only sure test of the fuel pump's performance (and the rest of the fuel delivery system) is to hook up a fuel pressure gauge.
Yes, check the relay in the PDB. You switch it with one of the other ones that are not part of the starting sequence. Also, make sure that the wire is firmly connected on the bottom of the inertia switch. If the wire comes off, it won't pop the switch, but it is needed to feed juice to the FP.
