Question Fuel Pump Conversion Mech -> Elec.

TRUCK: 1973 Ford F-100 Ranger XLT, 360, 2 barrel MotorCraft carb

BACKGROUND:

I'm new to working with vehicles and am learning as I go (to the dismay of the truck @ times). My dad and I just pulled the engine and the truck and we are going to replace it with a 1975 engine from Ford.

I was interested in installing an after-market fuel cutoff switch (one that is activated with impact, like another car, tree, deer, etc), but the manufacturers say that they only work with electric fuel pumps. My fuel pump is currently a mechanical fuel pump.

QUESTION: Is there a conversion that can be done to go from a mechanical fuel pump to an electronic fuel pump for my truck?

Thanks,

JLS

Yes, Holley and many other companies make frame mounted electric pumps. You need to install them as close to the tank as possible to get the most out of them. The inertia switch is designed for when the vehicle is hit in the rear to kill the pump. Since you have a mechanical pump, why don't you hook it into the hot wire to the coil, this way, if you get hit, it will kill the engine which will stop your fuel pump from pumping? Seems alot easier to me than wiring up a new pump, replumbing the fuel lines and finding a block off plate for the mechanical one.

Hrm.

1) Any suggestions as to where/from whom to buy an aftermarket inertia switch? *** has one for $50.00, but I'm not sure what prices should be like for such a device.

2) Suggestions as to where in the truck the switch should be located (frame, firewall, engine, etc)?

Thanks for your assistance,

JLS

It is usually mounted on the inside of cab either on the firewall or on the panel in between the door and the firewall. Where the vent in on the passenger side.
I would go to a junkyard to get one out of an 86 or newer Ford car or truck.

If you go to an electric pump, just wire it so it stops if the engine is turned off. These are low pressure pumps, 5 psi.

Inertia switches are EASY to find & add, so don't take a chance.
