Radiator flush kit?

Have any of you ever used the Prestone coolant system flush kit? It is time for the wife's car to have a coolant flush, and considering "quick lube" and dealer prices, I picked one of these kits up at the auto parts store. I haven't installed it yet, but it seems it would make the whole process easier and yield the same results. It would also allow me to fill the system with distilled water, instead of the tap that the service places use, and insure that the car is running so the the heater core is properly flushed. I was just wondering if anyone had any personal experience with this type of item. Thanks for any info!

Is it the cut the heater hose inline type? They work well but I keep it simple. Just remove one of the heater hoses and put the garden hose to it and start flushing. It prevents me from having to cut anything.

Radiator shops here recommend flushing with plain water. The flushes sold at autoparts do very little in cutting build-up inside the blocks and radiators. If the build-up of deposits is great enough to cause overheating, it has to be mechanically removed by a process called "rodding." They take a metal rod and run it down the radiator core to remove the deposits. jd

Remove the T-stat before you start the flush, cold incoming water will keep the stat closed.

According to the directions, you leave the car running during the flush. Considering that the engine is running, with no coolant added to the water, wouldn't the thermostat stay open?

I've used them a few times ( never on a Ranger), and they worked pretty good.

Also, it would usually give you a good spot to let all of the air out of the system. ( top of the T)

Question of the hour is always what do you do with the old antifreeze. Used to just dump it until they told us what nasty crap it really is ( it never breaks down -- it's not just that it can kill Fido) . They sold recycling kits for a while, but I don't see them around any more.
