Ford first offered lap belts as an option in 1956, but they weren't standardized on cars till 1/1/1966. Trucks got standard lap belts for model year 1967.
Prior to 1966, Ford offered two types of lap seat belts. The "aircraft" type, which originally meant metal to webbing, and the metal to metal type...that is, the tongue was metal, as was the buckle. Both types have been reproduced.
btw: The retractors were sold separatly for both types of belts thru the late 1960's.
ok. now, what does the law say about seatbelts???? if the vehicle didnt come from factory with belts, i am exempt from having to have them by law right????? or am i gonna have to go get some and install them????
I called the police station on this same question for my 1964. He said that if it came with belts that it needs belts. If it did not come with belts then you are exempt from the seat belt law. I have two girls so I added belts. I got some repros with retractable lap belt. They are slick and look really good. Do a search on the web and you will see whats available.
I added seatbelts simply for the reason of safety. Granted, I don't always wear them, but they are there.
I did check these rules before I installed them though. I found out that you don't need seatbelts, emissions control (catalytic converter), etc etc... An interesting one I found out is that you don't need a working speedometer! Mine didn't work anyways.
You don't need a speedometer because the cop has one at the end of his arm when you pass by him and yours is at zero anyway when he stops you.
My '65 didn't have seatbelts but it already had the eyebolts to click some on. I had a spare set of belts from a '63 Thunderbird and used those. It was a necessity in that truck. The slick vinyl seat would have me slide over and crack my right elbow on the passenger door on a hard left turn. Maybe I should have toned down the Uncle Jesse driving technique...
I used some belts like these in the Galaxie. Something like that would work if you want the snap-in kind. They make them with bolt-on ends as well. Mine were out of a Army helicopter.
My 64 had some eye bolts that someone had cut the eye off of. I figured these had something to do with originaly having belts. Figure the young guy before me found out he didn't have to have belts and cut them off. Thanks for that post TNT.
Have they ever been reproduced exactly like the originals? I'm only coming up with generic, one size fits all belts. I need to add some so I can haul my kids with me. I have been a couple motorcycle tie downs tied to the seat frame to keep them in but I don't like that option very much.

The 65/66 Mustang seat belts have been reproduced, and are the SAME seat belts as used in 1961/66 F100/350's, 1960/64 Galaxies, 1960/66 Falcons, 1962/66 Fairlanes. These are the deluxe belts with the color co-ordinated buckle.
Seat belts are not required IF the vehicle didn't come with them as standard equipment, and that didn't happen till 1/1/1966 on ALL the cars sold in the US, and light trucks beginning 9/1966 for model year 1967.
Seat belts as standard equipment was a part of the new Fed Safety Standards, which went into effect on the two dates I typed above. In addition to seat belts, a left hand o/s mirror, backup lights, turn signals (!) and a heater/defroster were also mandatory.

Here in Oklahoma, the police have told me if the vehicle did not come from the factory with belts, then belts are not required. HOWEVER, if the vehicle did not come with belts and someone has installed belts, then they must be worn or a citation can be issued! I have three vehicles that fall into that catagory, a 56 Ford sedan, 60 vette, and 64 F100 SW. All three now have belts so I TRY to remember to wear them. My grandaughters will help to remind me when they are with me!!! LOL

Or you could just remove them and they could never know...
But if they're already on there and you don't mind the look of safety (some people hate the look of seatbelts in their hot rods), then I'd say just leave them be.
