Sound System

Another 6.4 rookie here,
Just bought a 2008 XLT and the stereo sucks big time. What kind of sound systems are you guys installing? Just installed Sirius Stelitto 2, but need sound.

And how much $.

Thanks

Rondog

If you're good with woodworking you can make yourself a custom subwoofer box for behind the rear seats. Here is a picture of the box I made for my crew cab.

Is there a "science" to building them? air volume? Dividers? Air ports? Or do you just measure up and enclose them together?

There is a science to building them if they're too small or not enough air flow you'll blow your subs if its too big you'll get a crappy sound

Rondog59, welcome to the site. Search around a bit, there are quite a few threads in this area where we have helped guys pick out stereo products depending on their needs and budget. There is even an Audio Video forum further down on the main page with a lot of information in it also.

The subs you purchase will come with all the details you need to make your enclosure. Most importantly, the cubic feet that is required for either a ported box or a sealed box. The box I made is sealed and I maximized the space I had behind the seat by moving the seat forward about an inch then cutting out a cardboard template so it would fit exactly. The cubic feet that was required for my enclosure worked out just right with a sealed divider right down the middle. I'm using one amp per speaker and it sounds great.

my experience with subwoofer boxes spans over the past 20 years.....and I leave it to the professionals. I am pretty good with woodworking, but when it comes to speaker boxes......nothing compares to a well designed box built by a professional installer, compared to one you can build in your shop or garage. I'm sure this will spark some debate...but I have heard the difference many many times. Without a proper enclosure....speakers will never reach their potential. It's not just the proper amount of air space...it's also design and application. And you get what you pay for with car audio equipment. The difference in amount of money you can spend is incredible......you could probably be happy with a complete system built for $400-650 or so......but you can easily get into the $2000 range, it just depends on what you want!

Far out! Thanks! Now how do I know what my speakers need? They're 8 years old and I don't have the original paperwork from them. Besides, they came in a box already.

That's going to be a tuff on. Only thing I can think of is go to the manufacturers web site.
Sometimes they'll have the specs for their old speakers on the site.
If not maybe you can send a message to their tech support dept.

Good luck.

I have a couple of questions for you if you don't mind. 1) Where did you get the sub box from? Do you think, in your opinion, that if I duplicated it myself with two 12" subs it would sound reasonable? Again, I don't need perfect sound I just need to pick up the bass a bit.
2) Off the topic a bit but, I'm gonna install the clearance lamps since I don't have them already. Do you remember if there was a harness to plug into on or near the Right A pillar or will I have to run a wire to somewhere under the hood and tie into the lighting? All your photos were from the right and don't quite show that.

I thank you in advance and that was a GREAT write up!

Later...
Brewster...
thanks man, ok to answer your questions

(i think I'll post this in the forum too if you dont mind)

the sub box i have i got from www.supercrewsound.com

it was made out of atleast 3/4" MDF and has all seams sealed.... there was not seperate compartments for 3- 12's.... also i used some "polyfill" (pretty much blanket batting u can pick up at any craft store for only a few bucks)
what that does is "fool" the speaker into thinking its in a larger box.

it will not fit if you have a power rear window
  • Fits four 8 or three 10 subwoofers
  • Fits three 12 shallow mount subwoofers
  • Fits behind the back seat
  • Must not have power rear window
  • Removal of jack is necessary
  • Vents need to be removed - ( i didnt have to)
  • MDF construction
  • Air Space = .55 cubic feet per sub (.83 per sub for dual cutouts) (99-07)
  • .45 cubic feet per chamber (.68 per sub for dual cutouts) (2008)
  • Mounting Depth = 5.25 inches
  • No large magnet structures
  • Speaker terminals
  • Hole cutout for 8" Sub = 7"
  • Hole cutout for 10" Sub = 9 1/8"
  • Charcoal Grey Carpet
i used 3 shallow mount rockford fosgate 12's model P3SD212
Its specs were;
Range: 0.60 cu. ft. - 1.20 cu. ft.
<!--ProductFeatureValue-ID:6525-->with mounting depth of 3.625 in.

the mounting depth may be your biggest problem. it would be helpfull if u could tell us any of the specs of the speakers.
As for sounding reasonable... anything is better then stock...

now as far as the clearance lights go, i didnt actually need to take the fromt pillars off for anything, so im not sure about the wire, but..... i noticed that i have the wire to the back for the rear window motor ... even tho i dont have one... so its entirely possible that the wire is already there for the lamps?
maybe this pic will help...
