Value of a 1976 4x4 Crew?
I found a crew cab that has been sitting in a field for the last 6yrs or so. The radiator started leaking and the owner gave up on it. It hasn't ran since then. It is fairly rough. The roof is dented on both sides. The front driver's fender has been caught on something and has a slight "non factory" wave. There is a slight dent in the bottom of the rear, passenger door. And lastly, the bed is crap. It would just need to be replaced. I realize the crewcabs are hard to find because there aren't enough around to get a good idea of value compared to condition. Most that I have found have been really nice and more than I want to pay.
The current owner doesn't really know what to ask for it and I don't know what to pay for it. It isn't really for sale, I just saw it in the field and thought it looked like a fun project so I asked if he would like to sell it. I realize that this is a pretty though question without seeing and feeling the truck but anyone want to take a stab at it?

Old crewcab 4x4's are very difficult to find in good condition or bad. You shouldn't feel bad about paying a $1000 or so. $2000 would be top dollar as it is going to need a lot of work. Like I always say, if you are going to fix up an old truck, fix up something beside a 2wd longbed. No offense to anyone out there, but I think you know what I mean.

You never know - I'd start at $300 and see how he replies. Just tell him you haven't seen any others around to compare price, but the standard cab ones seem to go for around that in similar shape.
In the end what you pay for it is what YOU think it's worth. I paid $5250 for mine, but 4wd ones are VERY uncommon around here and I had been searching for a while. Plus mines in a little bit better shape...
If they are pretty common out there then another one will come up if the guy wants more than you think it's worth. If they are hard to find around you then cough up the $2k+ and call it done

Well, I got some bad news. The current owner said that he would be glad to sell it but he bought it from his uncle and their deal was that if he ever sold it, his uncle got first shot. He said there was no way his uncle would want it though. Well, guess what, his uncle wants it.
Anyone know of any others in Oregon? I would even be happy with an earlier crew. I just don't want anything past '79. The 80s got ugly in my opinion. Thanks to everyone for their input!

I know of somebody selling a decent 2wd, but its in Eldorado Ca. *COUGH* *COUGH* third truck(orange) from the right *COUGH* *COUGH*
Have the guy talk to his Uncle, tell the guy to tell his uncle that he is selling it. Don't throw in the towel till the old man says "NO!" for sure. Sometimes being persistant (but not pushy) can net you some great deals. That is partially why I have so many "I got this great truck for dirt cheap" threads. (and so many of them in my sig, including the red crew cab I want to get rid of )

Thanks! I have been hitting all those sources looking for a while now. I have been watching this truck for about 6 months, trying to catch someone at home. Oh well.
You know, crazedlist.org is great for searching an entire state at once on craigslist. Just incase someone doesn't know about that yet........

Did you get the guys phone number at least? Give him a call and lay on the SOB story really REALLY thick, say a long lost well loved dead relative had one, and you want one in rememberance of him, or some tear jerking molarkie. Whatever you do, don't tell him that his truck is worth a grip of cash, crew cabs are the same value as a STD cab....

I love how "3 in a year or so" is considered "common" for these things! The more I looked into the crews the more I have seen around, but that is probably due to my extensive searching for them. 2wds are definitely more common around here than 4wds, but "common" is obviously a relative term as you don't really see any of these on the road anymore. I've one seen 1 (its a 2wd) on the road in my fairly overpopulated area. But then again this is Newport Beach - I see more Ferrari's driving down the road than old fords!
