My dad would always honk the horn while driving through a tunnel. Us kids loved the echo it made and always begged him to do it again.
When he saw a train crossing a trestle over the road ahead he would always speed up to get under it before the train passed, then scream "ahhhhhh! we're gettin run over by a train!" and us kids would all scream our best dying screams.
Every time dad needed to make up a story it would always start with "back when I rode with Marshal Dillion..."
Dad, always let me step on the floor board mounted starter switch in his '53 Chevy pick up. Took all the butt I could muster up sometimes...but, I sure felt like I did something special when the 'ol gal cranked up.
Yeah, A different time to be sure. We used to go to MacDonald's as a treat. Had to drive to the next county. Seems to me you could get a small burger, fries, and a Coke for $ 0.25. Or was it $ 0.19?.... Way back walla go.
Now, I've got 2 Mac's on the same road 2.5 miles apart and various other fast food joints in the same proximity.
I sure did like those fries those. They seemed better back then.
I dearly miss those days on the farm. We had horses, cows, pigs, and chickens. fresh milk and eggs everyday, I gathered many warm eggs out from under the hens and had them with smoke house ham and biscuits made with lard. Of course I was just a kid and didn't have a clue about how special those days were.
As a kid we lived in a valley. I recall pushing my bike up to the top of South Mountain and flying down. It was impossible to stay in my lane and if I had ever met a car coming up the world would have been denied so much wisdom.
When I was a kid we still got Coke in glass bottles and did the whole bottle exchange thing (what the hell ever happened to that?)
One time we were coming back home after exchanging some bottles for a brand new case of Coke, probably like 24 bottles. It was summer, it was hot, and we were going over a bumpy road, and all of a sudden "pow!" Almost all the bottles blew their caps and sprayed Coke all over the inside of the back of my dad's Subaru station wagon
It had light tan upholstery and it was permanently stained by all that Coke, especially the headliner.
Me and my brothers also used to go out behind our house every spring and catch crawfish in the creek back there. The only time of year it regularly had water in it was spring when snow was melting and there was regular rain, so for a few weeks it was full of all kinds of crawfish and other little critters. We also had a small sectioned dammed up to make what we dubbed "the crawfish pond."
When I got big enough my Dad used to take me frog giggin'...at night...with spooky things and snakes and such. I was always a bit nervous on those nights but, jumped at the chance to go. Scared the hell out of me one night when a dead (?) frog jumped out of my bag. Scared Dad pretty bad too but he laughed hard about it....to cover it up.
Now days I have a pretty big snake phobia...but, would jump at the the chance to do it one more time with him.
I don't know why, but, here lately I have felt a strong need to share whimsical events, stories, wisdoms, etc. with my youngest daughter who turns 16 in a few days. Especially little tidbits about my Dad...Who she never knew.
So...
When I was a kid my Dad would often yell "DUCK" when we drove under a bridge.
Did he lean on the horn when driving through a tunnel ...like mine did ?

A little off-topic...but I work in the Coke warehouse. In the middle of the summer, it get's HOT in there. Hot enough, that the 2-liter bottles will randomly explode without notice. About twice a week, you'll here what sounds like a gunshot.
Grandpa Pete "letting" me use the gas power mower to cut the lawn.
Grandma Florence in the garden with us grandkids, giving us a nickel a piece for those green horned tomatoe worms.
Getting to sit in the drivers seat and start who evers car the men folk were tinkering with that sunday.
Sitting down to Sunday supper, and NO ONE would dare to fill their plate until Grandma was sitting at Grandpa's side and he would give his little nod.
Larence Welk after dinner dishes were done, Disney after that.
Yahtzee and oatmeal raisin cookies with a cold glass of milk meant the day was coming to a end at 40857 peach street.
