tuning a 4r70w

I have a 5.8 and a 4r70w trans. I have a computer out of a bronco BIO0 that was for a 5.8/e40d mass air. I have a tweecer and have tuned several 5.0s and will have no trouble tuning the engine. My question is can I rewire the computer to run the 4r70w? I can tune the trans with the tweecer. Has any one done this used a e40d retuned computer to run a 4r70w trans? I know there are 5.0/4r70w mustang combo's. Will I need a computer that made for a 4r70w?

After more reseach I find that I can wire up the 4R70W to the BIO0 computer. The only difference is the Coast Clutch Solenoid. The E40D has one and the 4R70W does not. What is the function of this solenoid? If the computer is not hooked up to it will it cause the trans to go into fail safe? Can the Coast Clutch Solenoid be tuned out?

The 4R70W does not have a coast clutch, so it doesn't need a coast clutch solenoid. The PCM is going to set a code for an open circuit with the solenoid circuit open. You could put a resistor across that circuit to tune that out.

I'm really interested to see if that PCM will run a 4R70W. I suspect that it will shift, but the shifts are going to be really bad and the trans will have a short time between major failures. All of the pressure control is going to be wrong because the mechanics of the 4R70W and 4R100 are so different.

I beleive that I can reprogram the computer to mimic the shift pressures of the U4P0 computer that runs a 4R70W using the tweecer. I want to be able to have firm shifts at WOT and smooth softer at part throttle. I am currently running an AOD trans behind the 5.8. It has been modified with the wide ratio gear set and most of the internals from a 99 4R70W it shifts great at WOT but is to harsh at part throttle for my liking. If the computer sets a code for the an open circuit with the coast clutch solenoid will it casue it to go into fail safe mode.

I don't know if it will send it into failsafe mode. A resistor in the circuit instead of the coast clutch solenoid should take care of setting a code. I think it needs to be 20-30 ohms.

I will try that thanks. Do you think the computer will run that trans correctly if its reprogramed.Do you know the shift pressures or at least what not to exceed. I am also going to rebuild the 4R70W. It's out of a 97 mountaineer. I also have most of a 4R70W out of a 99 town car. I have heard that the 99 valve body is better. Are there any updates that should be made.
