Hey folks,
I am thinking about un-pluging my ebpv to try to stop the horrible hissing noise.(4 in straight pipe) The truck makes the noise as long as I am not on or off the gas, so to speak. If I am just trying to hold a steady speed it is hissing, witch seems wrong to me. The air box has been gutted and a Mac air filter installed a few years ago. I found some mention of a temp. sensor in this box affecting this, but I need more info. Also people have posted that I will get a SES light or something. Will you always get a light when you un -plug this thing. I don't want it anymore. Thanks for any info.

The EBPV will close when your truck is cold, and the air temp is cold. It uses the AIT (the sensor you're referring to in the air box) and Oil Temp sensors to determine that it wants to close the EBPV. It then uses the EBPS to determine how much it's closed. If your EBPS tube is clogged, it will do what you describe. Once you get going, the PCM should open it. When it's REALLY cold, it will apparently stay closed when you're driving slowly, but should open when you get on it. There is a fooler for it, but I'd check your EBPS tube first -- it's worth a MPG or two if it's plugged up. Out of curiosity, what kind of mileage are you getting now?
I checked and cleaned out the tube last winter when it was doing this. I drove me crazy then as well. My MPG now is about 15. I have a 500lb. steel topper and another 400 or 500lb of tools in the truck. In the summer on the highway I can get 17mpg. Since I do not have the top of the air box anymore where is the AIT sensor? and could it be exposed and not heating up or getting warm? The truck makes this noise all day no matter how warm the thing gets. The gauge gets into the normal range in a few miles, but it make the noise anyway. Thanks for your help
Which one is the EBPS tube?, my truck is all stock yet and it makes this same sound when running in the 35-45 MPH range. I only have about 75,000 on my 01 so it don't seem like something would be clogged yet but you never know.
Nevermind, found several other threads on it and figured it out.

The only way you will get rid of the hissing is to replace the open element filter with a sealed air box. What you are hearing is the turbo sucking air through your open filter.
Some people like it, some don't. I happen to like it.
If the noise goes away after warmup, it's the EBPV -- if not, it's the open element like Brandon said. Your mileage is on par with most folks, so it's not likely a clogged EBPS (especially since you cleaned it already!!).
