Ring gear or Flywheel HELP!
I have a 79 f250. It has a 460 w/ C6 trany. Every mechanic I speek to says that I need a new ring gear as the weights are missing. I have a friend that has a 400 motor that is out of a wrecked truck. C6 trany as far as I know.
My question. Will either the ring gear work? What about the weights? If I welded them onto the ring gear in the truck will it be the same?
What are the differences if any?

Is the motor a transplant or is an actual 79 460? If it is factory it is an externally balanced motor. Look for a counter weight behind the crank dampner. (Looks like a small crankshaft counter weight.) The flexplate is supposed to have a weight welded to the flexplate in a specific spot in order to balance it. The weight in not on the ring gear itself. You can buy a new replacement flexplate for not a lot of money. Check out "e-baymotors.com" then in the search box type in "460 ford" and you will find quite an assortment of 460 parts. There was a new flexplate on there a few days ago for a 79 up 460. May be gone by now though.
