super duty drive shaft?

Has anyone else ever thought about using a SD drive shaft in our trucks? I would think the SD shaft would be lighter and stronger than the stock shaft on my 79 F350 4x4. The engine output and GVWR on the newer SD's are far greater than a stock 79.

Anyone know about this?

The drive shafts don't even come close to the right length and the U-loints are metric. You would be better off with a custom driveshaft.Plenty of guys like me are pushing 425 HP and 500 Ft pounds through the stock driveshafts just fine.

Maintenance is your friend. Replace your u-joints, and lubricate them every oil change, they should last a long time. If you dump your clutch or do a neutral drop at 5K RPM, you can destroy just about anything. I guess what I am trying to say is, don't abuse it, and maintain it, it will last.

My 472 is pushing upwards of 500 hp, the strength of the stock shaft is not in question as much as the possibility of having a "lighter" shaft. I would think the metal and build process of a new SD shaft would be an upgrade to my 79 era shaft. A lighter shaft should take less power to spin. I can have the U joints changed to an updated older style so the metric sizing is not a big deal, it would be a custom shaft in the end.
