Smile K&N alright

I know some of you guys hate k&n filters, but and i personally had a air box sealing issue.

After a phone call last week, i sent them a couple pictures, and they sent me a brand new filter (the new design)

Apparently they knew about the 7.3 filter problem, and if you buy a filter from them, i'd say your taken care of, i didnt even have my recipt!
They shipped it to my door for 0$ to me!

I have to say i am impressed...and the new designed one seals perfect by the way.

As long as you have the redesigned stock box, and not the 1st gen box.
for the life of me I still cant understand how a k&n flows and filters better the dirtier it gets

I would ditch the stock airbox and K&N filter and buy a 6637 filter from napa or fleetfilters.

I have been using K&N filters for more than twenty years, mostly on high rpm, high horspower gas engines and now on my 7.3. I have yet to have a failure. When properly installed and maintained (I DO NOT fall into this catergory) they function fine. Reading all the hype on here on them made me re-think its use and I've checked the intake tube and turbo a couple of times. I have yet to see any dirt, dust or misc. crap in there. All I can say is 140,000 and going strong says something. I'll just think everytime I clean my K&N about the $30 and the trip into town I just saved.

It's amazing that it has taken this long for K&N to finally realize that the drop in filters did not fit properly. I ran one for a very short time in my truck back when I first bought it used in '03 and here it is 2008 and they are finally now fixing this major issue. Talk about being out of touch with their customers. 5+ years of R&D to realize that you can put a K&N drop in filter next to a stock Motorcraft filter, and clearly see the seal around the edge was just too thin to make a proper fit.

Mine leaked so bad that in 3K miles I had dust all inside the intake tube. K&N left a bad taste in my mouth and I'm done with them for good.

Well, parkland, it's not always just a matter of opinion regarding the K&N. Have you read through the Air Filter Study that is linked below? It shows some measured performance values for the K&N that I would think would be rather alarming for a K&N owner with our PSD's. The filter in their study is just a different size from the Stock replacement element for our trucks.

Pete,
I read your study and it is skewed. If you read all the graphs and data you will see that all filters except two used course dust, K&N and one other were subject to fine dust. Why the difference? If you read the dust size make-up you will see that almost 40% of the course dust is larger than 40 microns (move that down to 20 micron and it goes up another 22.4%), while a majority(about 75%) of the fine dust is less than 10 microns. It don't take rocket science to see that there is a problems with the data concerning the K&N and the other filter subject to the fine dust. The study has the gall to say that course dust is used for testing because it is the industry standard and because it provides higher flow pecentages. Again, why the change to fine dust for two filters?

Good study of filters but it aint worth a dime because they altered the testing process for two filters included in the study.

I will continue to use my K&N until valid data can prove that it is the piece of crap that it is considered to be by so many on this site.

By the way, mine is not the factory replacement but rather the cold air type. If people intalled the replacement type, saw that it did not fit right and chose to use it anyway, shame on them. I have and will continue to return items that do not fit or operate as said by the manufacturer, how else will they know their product is crap.

An oil analysis will speak better than your eyes. Do one and then we'll compare results. With 5,000 miles on my oil, Silicon has never been higher than 8 in my oil and that is with a 6637. I am not knocking you but this is a microscopic evaluation, not a macroscopic one. I am curious how much silicon is in an oil sample with a K&N. Do an oil anaylisis and post back if you could. If it is higher than normal, just switch to a better filter and your turbo will love you for it.

Tim

For those using the K & N, Have you done a used oil analysis to see what the silicone level is?

+1

I've got about 280,000 on mine and it was worth ever penny. If you are smart enough to install (use) it properly you will not have any problems either. If your smarter then dirt, it will be worth every penny to you too.

Yes, I have, the Blackstone report showed I was low on every Element, not only for the 10,000 oil change, that it was but even if it was a 5,000 mile change. It also stated my 7.3 wear was better then most on the road today for any amount of miles. The report was very complementary.
