New headers and y-pipe
For your 3-valve, it's best to leave it alone, someone else who did all sorts of things with his '05 3-valve found no improvements from the exhaust (except noise).

I wanted duel exhaust so the shop guy who seemed to know what he was talking about took larger pipes from the manifolds to two separate cc's, then back to a dual pipe magnaflow, then out the back. Looks great, sounds great (for a V-10), but I'm concerned about the low end torque loss you mention. Can you explain it a little more, please.

I have EZpass, so I don't have to stop at toll booths, and there was almost no traffic whatsoever.
I was amazed.
The previous year, same trip (215 miles one way), same load (camping), was 16.2MPGs but with lots more traffic. Who knows...
Thanks

Other than keeping everything in tip-top shape, the slightly larger tires, the headers, and a oiled-gauze filter (not K&N but close), there's nothing I really did differently.
If I were you, I'd clean the MAF, change the fuel filter, do the plugs if they haven't been done already (I have). Check for vacuum leaks, and even exhaust leaks. On top of that, MAYBE change the O2 sensors, because they do go rich over time.
If that doesn't help, check the fuel pressure at idle and under load to make sure it's within specs. If it's not, you need more throttle to get the power you need (even cruising on the highway), using more fuel.
Also, make sure your tire pressures are high enough...
The only other thing I've done is put a cab-height cap/topper on the bed - I've had it on and off over the years, and everytime on that same trip I got 17+ last time, the cap has improved the MPGs at least .5 to 1 MPG. It might not make a difference on a long-bed, or a crew-cab, because of the different lengths, but it definitely helps me a lot.

I appreciate the response. I'm not sure about the gearing, but I'm going to assume they're around 3.73 just by the rpm on my tach at highway speeds. I'll deffinately clean the MAF as I hadn't thought about that or the O2 sensor either. She's got 120000+ on her so I would imagine it needs that done. I have the Crew Cab and short box and had thought about a cover on the bed. I carry a four-wheeler a lot so a shell isn't practical.
Thanks a lot for your advice as I'm new to V-10's

I have an Undercover tonneu on my truck which will help mpg some. Love the undercover because it weighs about 40lbs and can be removed in seconds. Best I've seen from my 04' was 15mpg, but I do little highway driving.

At 120K, the O2 sensors have shifted enough that I'm sure that's going to be at least some of the problem. Once you do change them, reset the PCM by disconnecting the battery, turning on the headlights to drain the PCM fully, and then reconnect it after an hour or so. That way, it will relearn everything with the new O2 sensors.
Shiny side up!
I had 1500lbs in the bed, 65lbs in the front tires, 70 in the rear, the topper, and a very light foot accelerating onto the highway.
Not many hills except the last 30 miles which is some steep stuff...

Thanks for the info, it helps. I've just picked up a Hylex Tower and have been talking to the shop about a set of headers. In the morning I'll clean the MAF and pick up the O2 sensors. I'd say off hand it all should help some. Any things gotta be better than the 9.6 it's telling me it's getting
Thanks again.

That makes all the difference.
I do all mine by hand. The first few weeks I had my truck, I was getting (on average) 9mpg. I had the A/C full blast, and just going Wide Open - really loving the TQ the V10 had.... But I paid for it at the pump. The truck is not a race car (no matter much I want it to be).
If I go slow, and keep the RMP's around 2k, I can pick up about 3-4mpg - just buy driving slower.
The winter, my gas mpg sucks. I'm getting about 9 again. It's due to using 4x4 to get to work (we got 6 inches of snow last night). Starting the truck to melt the ice off the windshied in the morning (remote start).
I've replaced my air filter (stock, nothing fancy) and fuel filter, and didn't notice too much of a change. I added a soft tonneau cover and I saw ZERO improvment. I did a seafoam treatment, and saw ZERO improvement. I also tried adding Lucas to the gas on every fill up, and didn't see a change. The only thing I've noticed is my foot.
This summer I will do my plugs and wires, change the fuilds in the diff and trans, and see if that helps any as well. I may also do a Banks exhaust (maaaaybe).
13mpg isn't that bad when you compare it to other gas trucks out there (not diesels - you want to compare apples to apples). My old 98 F-150 two wheel drive work truck would get around 14-15. The new F-150's are stickered at 13-14 city, so the SuperDuty isn't doing too bad. Heck even some of the diesles here are getting the same as us V10 guys, or worse (and they have to worry about turbo problems and $$$ oil changes).
