I just put 3.73's in my truck. Best thing I ever did to it. However, my truck is 4x4 and Ford did not put 3.73's in these trucks. Kinda wish I had known that before I made my decision. So finding a used ring and pinion for my front axle is difficult. The ring and pinion for my rear axle was an upgrade kit for a newer truck that I purchased from eBay. It is easy to find gears for the 8.8 but the Dana 44 reversed rotation is harder to come by.
As far as shifting goes, I thought of that idea too. I haven't noticed any problems yet except one spot on my road at the top of a hill. It wants to shift into OD as I let off the pedal to go around the curve. Then it quickly downshifts because the climb is not over. Another issue, the transmission hunts for a gear when using the Cruise control on a hill at 75mph. Only a minor issue but at least it doesn't hunt for gears on flat ground like it did with the 3.31's.
