Okay guys here is one for your brains, after have the flywheel and the starter replaced on my 87 460, the truck will no longer turn over at an addiquit speed, when the engine gets hot? but when the engine is cold the truck starts perfect, doesn't even miss a lick. ?? possible really #####ty starter? or possibility that they put the flywheel on backwords?
I will have to agree with George. Make sure your cables are in good shape and the connections are tight, you say that this started after you change the starter and ring gear, you possibly may not have connected the battery cable tight enough at the starter, also have a look at the ground cable. Why did you change the starter and ring gear? Eric
I didn't change it myself, my dad took it to a friends shop, they changed the ring gear due to teeth being broken, was starting fine before, cheap rebuilt starter, it starts fine when the engine is cold, no problems except for when the engine gets hot
You would not be the first guy to get a bad rebuilt starter, get the starter draw checked when its hot that should tell you the condition of the starter Eric
I just finished the same job on my 76! Just yesterday. Working out of my garage, I had to pull the tranny completely to get in there to replace the flywheel. My flywheel was badly chewed up, and would barely start the trruck anymore. I got tired of rotating the motor by hand to get good teeth, so I bit the bullet and bought the flywheel and new starter drive. The starter is old, but still works ok for now. Starter drive and gear set was only 7 bucks, and was easy to replace. (better than the $70 CAD to get a rebuild!) Anyway, starters are easy to replace, so I want to squeeze that last bit of life out of mine. It turns a little slower when hot, but still starts the old girl. Yeah, and the battery cables are important.

Had the problem with '83 460. I put a starter on it from a '69 429. It is a little heavier. It has the solenoid on the starter and you also use the standard Ford Solenoid mounted on the inner fender. I also useed 2.0 welding cables from the solenoid to the starter and for the Ground. overkill I know. But helped my problem also.
