Ok, quick sanity check. One of our work trucks (F350) is at the stealership this am - just got a call regarding our concern that this truck is using a little too much oil. We're still just within the powertrain (engine) warranty @ 88K but the reg warranty is long gone.
The guys that usually drive this truck are saying they are adding 1 qt/week. They drive roughly 500 or so miles/week. They check the oil lvl as part of their everyday checklist and note how much they are adding in the vehicle's logbook.
This was the reply we got from the stealer service dept- "1.5-2 qts / 1000-1500 miles is normal"
Our other 7.3's don't use much oil at all. The UOA results for this truck don't point to anything specific like a bad airfilter or other signs of really bad wear. The wear Metals are running a little on the high side for this engine when compared to the others though.
Using 1.5 qts @ 1,000 miles, that would be 7 qts during a normal oil change interval. I loose 1/2 qt in 5000 miles. That is a lot of oil used in my opinion.
I had this happen to my truck a quart to quartand a half in 750 mi
guess it was going through turbo because since changng turbo no more oil consumption
Any oil leaks? It seems excessive to me as well. I don't even lose 1/2 quart between changes and i've been driving around with an oil pan nut that was slowly leaking.
Agree its a lot - most of our trucks use little if any oil btw changes.
No Oil leaks we could find - Stealer did add the UV "glowing dye" to the oil and topped it off. It's due back over there next wednesday for them to look for a leak. Instructions were to track oil added and report it to the advisor when we drop the truck off.
This truck is on its 2cnd turbo - 1st one went @ about 73K (bearing end play & noise)
