460 Cam

Hey there folks, me and my buddy are about to install a cam into his 79 F-250 2wd with a 460. We cannot decide wether we need to replace his stock valve springs with something that has a bit more valve spring height, more tension, etc. The cam specs are .493 intake .502 exhaust.. and the duration is 288/292 gross. We need to know very quickly wether we need to or not as this is his daily driver!!!
Any help is great
thanks!

Well I don't see any problems with spring bind with the valve lift. And as far as more tension; unless you planning to rev the engine beyond 6000RPM I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck

You may get away with it if the valve springs are fairly new...say less than 10,000 miles. A valve spring will lose at least 10% tension within the first few thousand miles. Be sure to check for coil spring bind no matter what you do...most cam Mfg.s want at least .050" clearance on the springs at full lift. Deen

You've already invested a lot of time time and have a lot more to go. Call the cam manufacturer and find out what springs they recommend for that cam. Ask what the difference is in compressed and open pressures for your stock springs and the new cam. If they're close, say 10%, use the old ones to get it on the road. If not, and you can't get them now, plan on changing them later. If they're too weak, you'll experience valve float at higher rpms. And it's a good sized job to change them later using rope or compressed air to hold the valves in while you change springs, cylinder by cylinder.
