i have an 85f150 my altenator is puttin out 14. 5 volts while running at 2000 rpm but only .3 amps i was told that it should be around .6 to 1.0 amps is this true if so what could be the problem the diod pat is goog and the truck has a new batt
yes just replaced the batt ive been havin problems for bout 6 months ive put a new voltage reg on a new voltage reg plug a new alt a new starter solinoid a nd had the solinoid and volt reg rewired and am still having problems befor the alter wasnt getting charged but after rewireing it is now charging just low amps

the regulator could still be bad, Ive seen a couple posts about people getting them bad from the part store (same thing with alternator). What do you mean rewire?
i ran new wires to the altenator then from the altenator to the batt and new wires from the voltage reg to evrything it ran to is there anyway to check the voltage reg and if its charging at about 14.5 volts y is the amps so low what can be causeing this, ive tried to ground the reg to the batt so it is grounded good ive done everything i can think of to fix it but just cant seem to figure out why the amps are low its a 70 amp alt and only bout 5 months old had it tested they said it was good ?? what do you think
Alternators only put out as much power as there is callled for. Not anymore, not any less (unless you exceed your alts capacity). I'd say running your truck should draw around 2-5 amps of power.
thanks for the info so when my truck is running the alternator should be around 14.5 volts at about .2-.5 amps then? And ill try to replace and tighten the belts
my father is an electrician and he mentioned something about it he has been an electrician for 35 years but if you are 100% sure ill thank you for the info
I am 100% sure. The regulator keeps the voltage at a certain level. If you draw more current, the voltage will drop, so the regulator kicks the alternator up a notch or two to bring the voltage back up.
If you really want to test it, turn the headlights on, the blower on max, the wipers on, and anything else you can think of. At idle, if the voltage is above 12 volts, you are doing good. If you rev the engine, the voltage should go even higher.
The ammeter on my truck is mostly worthless, it barely indicates charge/discharge because shunt resistance is so low. The ammeter barely shows charge when the alternator is adequately charging two batteries (main and auxillary) that are both low, yet the alternator is outputting approx. 14.6 volts.
