Cops!

ford shop did my plugs - 450 bucks. my engine has 75k on them. i was told it would cost 100 bucks apiece to replace them. what purpose do they serve and why do they cost so much? i could not get at the back plug to change it, thats why i had ford do it. i should be able to do my own cops [lright]? let me know what you think. tl

i agree 100%, it's another rip off from ford
and a vary bad engine design, get this one,
now i understand if a heater hose leaks or
burst you have to remove the intake to replace
a heater hose,what that all about(bad design)
i wish i had investigated all these problems before
i bought the truck last month(98 f150 4.6)
i would have stayed with my dakota.but i wanted
to get an extented cab.

$450 just for plugs is ridiculous even for a Ford dealer. $300 is more in their range. Last time I heard Ford was charging around $100/COP which is also a joke. You can get them from about $15-$25 a piece depending on which kind you want. There are people on ebay that sell all 8 for around $100 and they work just fine and accel now has them for around $25ea.

Now at 220K I finally replaced all my COP's I had 1 go out on me a year ago and decided to do the rest. The only part that really needs changed with the plugs every time is the COP boot which is more or less your spark plug wire. I forget what they run but I want to say around $15ea from Ford or just get a whole COP with boots for that from anywhere else.

i have 160k miles and put in new plugs at 120k. they cost $2 each at Auto Zone. You dont need COPS unless they fail. Like Galaxie, if i had 250k miles i might consider replacing them as preventative maint, but not at 100k just because... also who pulls the manifold to replace heater hoses? Hiker, you need better information and a good mechanic.

COP is Coil Over Plug. Instead of having coil packs like Chevy or Dodge, there is an individual ignition coil that sits on top of the boot thats snapped to the plug, hence Coil Over Plug. My truck has 225,000 mi on 'er and i've only replaced one, from when a plug blew and broke the bolt flange off the coil. I wouldn't let them talk you into theres, O'Reillys or AutoZone sell them for 35.00 to 65.00 bucks, depending on what brand and warranty you want. I put the 35 dollar one on 6 months and 25,000 mi ago and it's still running like a champ. That 450 sounds pretty outrageous, as the motorcraft platinum plugs (the same ones ford uses) are about 2.25-2.50 from O'Reillys. The whole chore takes about an hour and a half, depending on your mechanical ability, but like i said it is a chore! You have to take the fuel rails off (which usually leads to replacing all the orings on your injectors), and the remote powersteering reservoir needs to be taken loose on bank 2 (drivers side) along with the intake hose. With all of this I still think you got taken at 450 bucks!

Can you post some links where you get the cops for so cheap? Even NAPA here in Canada charges over $100 for them.

I see Accel's are now up to $35 at Summit, here is the link but I think they redirect back to the home page so search accel coil for a 5.4L Ford: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

Part # ACC-140032

Accel's on ebay are running for $10ea. and I can't find the sets of 8 for around $100 right now. I only see 1 for $200 or best offer.

Vmax, I replaced the cops when I changed the plugs this past summer on my 97 5.4 with Accel's for $29 each on sale from a local perfomance shop in Ontario, but I think the regular price was about $40, still way cheaper than ford or napa.

I would check the prices at ROCK AUTO before I purchased Plugs or COPS from any other source. Motorcraft brand and at a reasonable price.

On a '97 5.4 the Time to replace all the plugs properly, i.e. revoving the PS reseviour, fuel rails, blowing/cleaning out the plug cavity very well, soaking with PB Blaster or WD40 to help prevent damage to the threads that then leads to plug blow-outs, and replacing all is in the range of 4 to 5 hours, unless you are very good. I have bee told FORD books 4.5 hours for the job.

1200 bucks to change the plugs? That's crazy. I did mine in 1hr 15min and I had never done a 5.4L before. I'd do them all day long for $1200 a truck!!

Summit has their own brand of COP cheaper than the Accels now.
