When its about 60 degrees outside, i noticed that my AC compressor seems to cycle a bunch. From teh time it clicks OFF to the time it clicks ON is about 10 seconds, sometimes its 12 if its a little warmer.
Is this too much? The truck seems to cool OK i guess.
At 60 degrees, that sounds about right. Maybe a tad short, so you're likely low on refrigerant. To find out for sure, you need a set of gauges and know how to read them.
As the outside temp drops, the cycle times will be shorter and you'll notice the cycling more.
Don't just try and "top off" the system yourself, especially in low temperatures. It would be too easy to have an overcharge condition when the temps go back up in the spring. I would suggest having a shop check it out and weigh in the proper charge.
Ill check again. Im not sure how long the compressors stays ON for. I just noted the time between when it clicked OFF and when it clicked back ON. From what i understand, its possible its ok. It doesnt fall under any recalls or tsb's, and its never been jacked with, so i have no reason to suspect it being low.
OK, i checked it again. The compressor stays ON for about 10-11 seconds, and OFF for about the same. This is with 50 degrees ambient temps. Guess its just the way the system is. I know it takes about 45oz of refrigerant according to ford. Its seems to cool off well, even when its 110 outside, so i guess no worries. I think my wifes stays on for 15 seconds and off for 15 seconds at teh same temp, but its a F-150 and smaller system.
