Question Transmission Problem??

Boy I sure hope not. After 110k trouble free miles just tonight all of a sudden it will not shift out of second gear. It is dark here on the east coast already so I have not even checked the fluid level. But low fluid usually means slipping, so what can cause it to not want to shift up into higher gears?

You are right usually slipping means low fluid. Have you had a chance to pull the dip stick and see what the fluid smells like. I sounds like something is broke in side the tranny or it may not be building enough pressure to shift it into drive. I am sure that so other will chimp in and lend a hand.

This is very unusual. To get up in the morning and have zero replies from fellow FTE members. Maybe because of football yesterday?

Check the fluid level and see what it smells like. Drain pan and take a look for debris in the pan. You can still reuse the drained fluid.

BTS just took a shot at it being one of the two shift solenoids. Anyone experienced this problem before?

OD light flashing? Any codes? When mine acted up, the center support bearing in the trans went south and pieces of debris caused some erratic shifting. Did find codes referring to the erratic shifts though before checking the pan and filter.

OD light is not flashing. That is the first question Brian's asked me. Everything about the tranny still works perfect. There has been no noise, clunks, vibration etc., just will not shift above second gear. BTS says there are 2 solenoids inside the pan that tell the transmission when and what gear to go into, but the catch is they are expensive. So I guess what I am looking for now is someone else that has had this problem. Electrical stuff is not returnable!

Well, you have talked to one of the formost tranny builders in the US. I believe I would try his advise, if it is not a solenoid, and you end up having to have the tranny rebuilt, those parts should not need changing.

Ask a dealership and see what they will do for you.

After having it looked at today it looks like I have much bigger problems than shift solenoids. On my way to have the codes read at a recommended tranny shop here in South Carolina the transmission began working perfect. It would not act up at all while being test driven by the tech. But I learned a long time ago that nothing on a vehicle fixes itself. So on the way back to my present "home" it screwed up again. This time it REALLY screwed up. It looks like I may be looking at an entire new transmission. Something I simply can't afford. I may have to sell the truck "as is", will keep everyone informed as to what i decide.

If you are going to do that, BTS will be a good choice.

That's the choice I would make. But as of right now I may have to sell it. Take it from me, you do not want to end up at my age after having made hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars in your life working your *** off in construction for cash, blow it on living the good life, and then find out you're too old to work anymore and SS thinks you must have died in 1985 because that is the last time they had ever heard of you.

Them were the guys that told my friend that people like him have either gotten better or died. Well, to this date, they haven't figured how he would be able to grow another lung.
