Wanted to know the spark plug gap range, and what is prefered... I am running MC single plats, and/or Autolite Double Plats
Also, are the coil packs on these in pairs? if so, how are they paired up? I get a CEL for 304 and sometimes 301 - just hoping it's the same coil pack for Cyl 1 and 4 :-)
lastly, the dealer gave me Single Plats for plug replacement - is there a benefit to running a Double plat plug all around, besides longer life of the plug?
what is the best plug I can put into this engine? I am using MC wires BTW
Not sure on what to tell ya bout the plugs, when I replaced mine I just went pretty much with OEM standard plugs and the gap size is under the hood right by the hood latch where it tells you what grade of oil to use. I don't have it memorized.
The coils are paired 1-5, 2-6, and 3-4, so I don't think the coil pack is causing the misfires. I'd suspect the plugs or wires. You could try cleaning the top of the coil pack; see if that helps. Also take a look with it running at night, to see if you see any sparking at the coil pack top.
You can run single plat plugs OK, but one bank will wear out quicker than the other due to the different bank polarities. Double plats are better for more uniform wear.
I would have recommended MCs a few months ago, but on the last plug change, I had one new plug that misfired right out of the box......
I've also had bad 'new' Champions, so I don't know what I'll go with next.....?
also, I wonder if the dealer will sell me just #4's wire - since the others are fine, and are MC wires.
do gaps change? I pulled the plugs, and I could swear most of them are a shorter gap than .054 - I didn't know if the electrodes cause the gap to change over time.
is there any harm is running a single cylinder with a Double Plat, where all the rest have single Plats in them? or?
You can run sungle plats, but there are different for each side, one side has the platinum electrode, and the other has the platinum on the tip. They have to be placed on the correct side, depending on which way the current is flowing through them. Double plats are the way to go, that way you don't have to figure out which side they go on.
side? of the engine? or of the coil set? - didn't think it mattered, since all the SP motorcraft plugs I got when I did it originally looked all the same... maybe I'm missing something here :-)
so, I guess I should replace #1 and #4 both with double plats and be done?
I've gotten 2 different charts from people regarding the Coil pairs - are they 1&4,2&5,3&6??
This is the 4.0L OHV engine.... I guess the coil packs are located directly below the wire caps, correct?
