hello everybody, I just bought a 1995 f150 4x4 351 a/t......sweet truck picked it at an auction for 700 bucks, anyway, the speedometer bounces everywhere all the time....not a huge deal to me but at the same time the tranny seems to shift hard into 2nd and bounce in and out of o/d. I am thinking that these issues are realted to the vss or the computer in the cluster itself...my question which failure is the most common, which should i start with or am i going in the wrong direction all together?
PSOM (Programmable speedometer/odometer module) is shot. Does your truck have a factory tach? If not, search car-part.com or Ebay for a tach cluster, make sure it's from another 95. The only trouble is, the PSOM stores the mileage, so whatever cluster you swap in your truck will show that mileage. You can get a PSOM from Ford, but they are expensive- about $350. I paid $125 for a tach cluster that was within 200 miles of what my truck had. If you're not concerned about the miles, they can be had much cheaper. I'd also change the trans fluid just to be safe.
That could be true, but I would replace the vehicle speed sensor / rear abs sensor on top of the rear end first. Its cheap and easy. The parts stores are usually confused if you tell them you need a speed sensor, you probably have to tell them you need an abs sensor.

I agree but would like to add the old sensor may have filings on it and you may be able to wipe it off and it would be OK.
But if it has filings on it may mean that the rear end has problems so you would need to drop the cover and take a look inside and while you are there take a close look at the tone ring as this could be your problem also.
Also check the wires going to the sensor and the sensor plug for damage.
My money is still on the PSOM, but the VSS and wiring could be the problem also. Seems that most of the time though it's the PSOM. Pulling the VSS and checking for filings isn't a bad idea though, and only takes a few minutes.
