Both of my trucks have a fist sized hole in the inner fender towards the front, with cracks that shoot out in 3 different directions. There are some bolt holes in that area, but I have no idea what went there. I haven't found it in my manual yet either. Any idea what goes there, and why it corrodes that spot?
In front of the radiator? Probably where a single horn was mounted. At least that's what ripped mine apart in that area. I don't think there's anything else in front of the radiator.
I suspect the reason that this area rusts out is because it's thin sheet metal and there is a lot of stress on it. That's one of the points that cab flexes the most. The whole body rides on the "dog bone" cab mounts on the back and the radiator in the front. Same reason the inner fender bracket that bolts behind the steering box usually breaks off. The didn't use this bracket on the '51-2s.
That's the area that the fender bracket slides into. As I said, it's a very stressful area and the flimsy sheet metal can't handle it. Most of the ones I have seen are at least cracked, if not rotted out.
The lower inner fender-to-frame bracket was discontinued sometime in '51, apparently a running change. (Or maybe some '51's got theirs replaced with the '52 sheet metal somewhere along the way)
Havi's description sounds like the hole is in front of the fender bracket? Is the hole totally caused by corrosion? And only on the driver's side?

I don't think so. The cracks are a good 3" long, and the rust is minimal around the open hole. If something was bolted to it, I can see it trapping dirt there, causing a rust-out, but the cracks are what had me confused. Anything weighty bolted there would have to go bye-bye, if it wasn't needed.
