I searched and can't determine if 5.4 is too slow for the SDs. I'm looking at a 04 F250 with 5.4 for $16 and an 04 6.8 for $20. I'll only be pulling about 7000lbs and don't care much about gas consumption so much as being able to keep up with kamikaze traffic.
I tow 10k all the time but if I had to do it everyday I'd be much happier with a v10. I only have a reg cab so that saves alot of wieght over the xc and cc. If your going to hual passengers and 7k all the time, I'd get the v10. But why is the v10 4k more?
The V10 is adds about 1K, and that one has less miles by 10K and is shinier. I don't know why the price difference other than that. The higher priced one is a private seller and the lower priced one is a dealer! Both are comperable except for mileage and color. Both XLT.

Are you going to have a manual or and Automatic transmission I had a "99" with an auto and that was a dog but the "04" has plenty of power with a 6 speed manual.
The real question is what gears does each truck have. If you get the 5.4L it better have at least 4.10's but 4.30's would be best. I have a V10 with 3.73's and I kick myself all the time for not getting 4.30's. It would have cost about $300 more then or $1700 now to get it regeared.

Great point in deed..I had the 4:10 in the "99" 3:73 in the "04" and 04 still more power..I do not understand that one but I guess that is life...LOL
Depending on how often you tow and the gears on either truck, I'd go for the V10. I love mine. Plenty of power towing on the highways even with the 3.73 gears. I've used a 5.4 at work and it truly is a dog pulling anything more than 4K lbs. It might be just that I'm used to the V10. I get in my truck and I feel like I'm in a hot rod compared to the 5.4 at work. That truck has a 4.10 gear ratio too.
I have a 5.4L with 3.73s, it can't tow a load at all....heck, can't even get out of it's own way.....................NOT!
I tow up to 9000 lbs on a regular basis (see picture). I don't have any problems.....however, I have the more powerful 3 valve engine and the 5 speed automatic. The 2 valve engine and 4 speed automatic aren't quite as capable. Also, I live in the midwest. If I was towing this load out west I would have gone with the 4.10 gears.
Without a load, this truck is a great daily driver.
I have an 03 with a 5.4 and I love it,80% of these superdutys is all driver anyways I have had this truck a little over a year still get wood everytime I get to drive it

I'm with you. I have the more powerful 3V 5.4L and the 5-speed auto and mine is not a dog. And mine has been used its entire life as a truck - hauling heavy loads.
Matter of fact our trucks are very similar: extended cab, SB, 4x4, 5.4L, 5-speed auto. Also, mine has the 3.73 limited slip rear. I like the color of yours - the red is real purdy with the body colored bumpers and mirrors. Very nice.
Now, to answer the original posters questions (or atleast give you my opinion), if you haul a lot and the mileage isn't a concern, go with the bigger engine - heck, why not? But maybe keep looking for a better deal on the truck you want

Now..LAMO that is one great post.....To much info though...
I have an '03 5.4 with 4:10's and I am happy with it's performance. While it is no race car, it has no problem keeping up with traffic, and will burn the tires no problem. It still much faster than my old truck with a 300-6.
