i used black stove paint..its good for 1200*..did this over a year ago..on its second winter and still looks good..will be repainting again this year ..i hung pipes in my shop... then sprayed them before i put them on...

I guess the paint doesn't burn off then. Seems a lot cheaper than the SS. I'll do the paint.....thanks
Another thing to consider is to rust proof your oil pan if you live in states where they use salt and deiceing chemicals on the roads.. You have pull the engine to replace the pan.. Been reading alot of posts here where oil pans are leaking becuz of rust..
I have to lift the engine to change the pan....Seems a little easier to rust proof it before it leaks. I had to do the same on my 94'f250...took the pan back to the parts store and used apoxy to fix a leak when I ran something over and punctured the pan...
Couldn't you do a sacrificial anode like they do with underground piping? Or would the more reactive metal cause problems or have a lower melting point....hmmm.... anyway... Stove pipe paint would work good as said above, or get an aluminized steel exhaust...my IDI had that and it didn't rust up at all...
