cold advance solenoid
cold advance solenoid
well i figured out today that my cold advance solenoid isnt working, and how risky is it to remove the top cover off the ip and see whats up ? ive also been playing around with the timing to see if i can get rid of the smoke issue at idle, and i have it set to where it has little smoke when it is reved up but find that it doesnt have the pep like it should. what do yall think?
thanks greythorn for the info , i think for a hundred bucks ill wait till i have to change the ip. plus im about to buy another truck for parts and it has a brand new ip on it so ill try it out and see how it works. thanks

If you decide to take it apart, be very carefull to put it back together the same way. The first time I replaced the ip top on a truck a work, I must have done something wrong and when I started it, the engine ran away very fast and luckly I got it in 5th gear and poped the clutch and killed it. It will not shut off unless you kill it.. I was ready for it to do this because I was for-warned that it could happen. Basicly I turned something simple into something complicated but hey, it happens. So If its an auto, you might want something ready to cover the air intake hole..
If you want more info on where I screwed up, let me know and I will explain in detail.

The fuel shut off solinoid arm needs to be repostioned properly against the governor linkage when you re-install the cover- easily done wrong- result IS a runaway engine with the possibility of blowing it up. The cold advance soliniod in the IP effectively changes the internal pressure, changing the timing advance. Have you checked for restricted return lines, can you hear the soliniod click when you apply power to it with a jumper wire? Power for the advance soliniod and the throttle rpm soliniod comes through a temp switch located behid the thermostat housing. I assume you have already rulled out those items, but mention just in case. Good luck.
putting IP top back on.
This was sent to me from Dave Spoingle......
To reinstall the govenor cover.
Start with the cover about 1/4" forward of the final position and about 1/8" above the mounting surface.
Move the cover rearward and downward making sure not to roll the gasket.
After the cover is down, move it backward and forward slightly till you feel the spring preload to make sure the ESO is not binding.
Reinstall the screws, flat washer against the IP cover and lock washer on top of the flat washer.
The ground strap must have a lock washer installed between the strap and cover.
Leave the FSS wire disconnected, turn the key to ON.
When you touch the FSS wire to the terminal, you should hear it clicking.
If you do not hear it clicking, the metering rod may be jammed in the wide open position.
The engine must not be started if clicking is not heard as a runaway engine condition may occur, resulting in serious engine damage and possible bodily harm.
The engine can not be shut off if the engine is started with the jammed metering linkage.
