6.4 feul mileage

We are a ford dealer in Northern Canada, and have been looking a customers truck , hard on fuel problem 6.6 miles per cdn gal, auto trans 3.73 axle ,towing fifth trailor with 7500pds of cargo -15c can't make it more than 380 kms runs out of fuel. We have done all checks; all checks out good. Talked with ford, and they say they have no fixs for the problem. We know they are harder on fuel than 6.o, we have some customers saying they are ok on fuel, and others saying they are real bad . So far, we have modded air box to keep snow out and let a little more air in, and gutted the cat. We were thinking of trying a programer. Is there any other tips or tricks we can do to keep this fellow pulling with a ford?
Thank you for any good info.

No offense, but are you serious!? You are Ford! You don't ask your customers how to fix the fuel mileage problem, we ask you. You have a billion dollar company at your back and we have all spent well over $30K on your trucks, in many cases well over $50K, and you ask us to fix it? Sorry but that is just wrong. Go figure it out yourself.

I would wait for $5/gallon fuel and then wait 2 decades for Ford to make MPG improvements.

I read an interesting post this morning on one of the Forums. Do the vanes in the turbo chargers on the 6.4 still move like they did on the 6.0? If so, could the extremely bad mileage 6.4's be a result of thevanes not returning and maintaining a higher turbo boost than required? I also found on my 6.0, before my 6.4 that you can gain at least 1 1/2 mpg with a tonneau cover as the bed actually acts as a scupper to slow you down, and thus burn more fuel.

Yes they do but only on one of the turbos.
I believe if you look under the hood and watch while someone turns the key to on, you can see the actuator go through its range of motion. This action is intended to help make sure the vanes don't stick.

Sunset;

I live in Chilliwack, BC and have not experienced the fuel mileage problem you are having in Northern BC. I tow a 10600 lb 5th wheel with my 2008 6.4 L PSD. It is a Lariat super cab with 3.73 ratio, 18 inch wheels, auto and 4X4. I towed to Ottawa and return for a total of 9000 km/5600 miles. Eastbound, I got 24.23L/100kms, 11.66 Imperial MPG/ 9.71 US MPG. and westbound I got 28.80 L/100kms, 9.81 Imperial MPG/8.17 US MPG. I had a lot of headwinds for about 25% of the return trip. Your 6.6 Imperial MPG is shocking to me. Truck now has 24,000kms/16,000miles.

Ford suggests in Broadcast Message 1271, 4450,6989 if fuel economy is in question, do a boost test. Boost should reach 22-25 PSI in third gear, wide open throttle under load. If this spec is not reached then diagnose the engine. Check sensor reading, VGT and EGR operation, fuel pressure and quality (ULSD), crankcase pressure, intake or exhaust restriction, exhaust or CAC leaks.

Lastly your appeal is appreciated by me. It is a new truck to all of us and this forum is an ideal place to share information and appeals. Being a dealer gives you as much a right to seek answers and sharing information. We cannot learn without the dealers experience gained from repairing faults.

I don't really think he works for a dealer, saying they gutted the cat, what dealer would ever do that?

After posting my thread, I re-read Sunset's Topic thread and noticed that he stated that the cat had been gutted. I also thought at that moment that no Ford dealership would remove the cat. If they did, Ford would not be happy about it and put the dealership in jeopardy.

With the cat being removed, I wonder what else has been done so the fuel mileage has been affected so much.

These trucks dont have seperate Cats, the DPF works in place of the cat, if they removed it and change the air box i would bet the truck is proably going to the regen all the time killing the fuel Milage. I am surprized the truck is not throwing codes. I have not heard of any succesfull mods of the DPF of air box that havent ended in big problems without aftermarket tunning.

put a scanner on the darn thing and go for a ride, take a look at the data display
while its running down the road, watch the data carefully. and you may find the problem! for 1 a dealer doesn't gut cats! 2 if a dealer comes on a forum they are seriously lacking tech info!
my answer is no they don't! trust me! i worked on a fleet of ford trucks gas and diesels and i asked ford motor company for help and they gave my shop that i worked at all the tools, tech info, service bulletins and recalls and all i had to do was ask for it!

A catalytic converter oxidizes unburned hydrocarbons and CO (and maybe NOX to N2). The DPF traps soot. They have different functions - Does the 2008 have a cat?
