I'm looking at buying another Bronco for a toy. The one I'm looking at has a C-6 Trans. I have experince with the AOD and the E40D. What are the good and bad of the C-6?
Good is they are damn tough. Only down side in my opinion is finding the right C6 since there is multiple bellhousing designs from various applications. So it depends where ya live and how popular Fords are there. Mechanically I havent heard much being bad or going bad too often on these though. Others will have to fill you in on that.
C6 is close to the E4OD transmission in size depending on which engine you are hooking up to. If its a windsor or 289/302 bellhousing or 300-6 bellhousing the transmission will appear smaller compared to the 370,400,429,460 bellhousing pattern. And depending long or short tailshaft also. I think the pans are the same shape but the E4OD has a bulge in the pan for making room of an internal piece.
it could be if you had all the right harness etc.. if its an 88+ with that combo it would already be efi so that helps. you would just need the complete harness from a bronco/f150 running the 5.8/e4od setup. I will say that the cost of an e4od rebuild is 1800-2500 vs 600-1200 for a C6. you might consider looking into a zf 5 speed manual being the easiest swap. you could keep the same computer in that bronco and everything.
The truck I was looking at got sold. So I'm going to keep looking. I think I'm going to hold out for a 302/AOD. I had good luck with my old Bronco. I want to strip off the body and make an aluminum one, so I dont need the 351 power. I like the small size of the AOD. I would like to move the engine/trans back in the frame. The E40D is so long that you cant move it back much. I got lots of time. I'm sure it will take me five years to finish with all my projects. Thanks for the info everyone.

C6 = The best, most reliable automatic transmission Ford ever made.
AOD = The worst, most un-reliable automatic transmission Ford ever made.
I've heard other people bad mouth the AOD. But I beat the hell out of the one I had. The only thing I ever had problems with was the first gear clutches. I believe that was because I was running 35" tires on stock gears. That puts a lot of stress on the tranny. I've got to have OD. Its going to be a toy, but it has to be able to go on the highway. I had a Vette with low gears and no OD. I will never do that again!

Obviously you never worked at a Ford Dealership beginning in 1980, when the AOD was first introduced in cars.
The AOD was the most troublesome transmission Ford ever made. Worse than the POS A4LD, used in the Rangers & Bronco II's...and that's saying something.
By 1985, the warranty repair costs for the little darlin' had exceeded ALL the previous A/T's warranty costs combined, back to 1951!
The SECRET to keeping the AOD from frying its innards is twofold.
First = STAY OUT of overdrive in heavy stop and go traffic...the constant searching up/down between drive/overdrive fries the transmission.
Second = install the largest external trans cooler you can find.

On my old Bronco, i always shifted OD because of the hunting you discribe. Also, I had an oil cooler. That may have been why I didnt have much for problems. If I end up getting another, I will do the same. Thanks for the info.
