I own a 1979 bronco with a 460 out of a 71 Lincoln. It has an oversized cam and a 750 edlebrock carb. It has a 7 inch lift with 38.5 inch tires, dana 44 up front and ford 9 inch in the rear i believe. It has a C6 auto trans and i believe 4:10 gears in the axles. Right now the gas mileage sucks in the city but not to bad for what it is. It has 51k on the engine and 7k on the trans. I got it on the highway and at 70 miles i was reving at 3000 rpm and the tires were loud. Sounded like an airplane was behind me. Now i need to travel 4 hours from raleigh to Charleston atleast once a month. How it is now the gas will be expensive and the ride will be loud. Now if i put 33 inch alterains on the bronco how much would that affect my gas mileage and would i be able to go faster because im not lugging around the 38.5s. Would it rev higher. Or would it be better to just buy a travel car. Thanks for any input.

Shorter tire will be worse for sure. I think you may have more than 4:10 gears though 3grand sounds high to me with 38s. You may not even be able to do 70 with 33s.
Buying a set of rims and 30" highway tires and changing for the monthly trip would be the most cost effective solution. These things weren't designed with a priority of comfortable highway crusing. Even if you get rims, tires and a high end stereo to supress engine/road noise, you'd be way ahead when compared to fielding another ride with initial cost, maintenance and insurance. If you don't have a compressor, I'd suggest an electric impact wrench and good floor jack to make the monthly tire chore easier. With everything, you'd be at around the cost of insurance and maintenance for a year of running another vehicle.
Just to take it one step further, you could also take an hour or two and swap the third member to a 3:55 unit from the wreckers. I know it sounds like a lot of work, but think of the crusing speed. Holy speeding bronco batman!!! However I think low profile street tires may be too much Purchacing an extra vehicle would defineately cost more.

By the time you buy a 'travel car' that you can be reasonably sure isn't going to burst into flames, register it, insure it, and maintain it, how much are you going to spend?
