remote starter

who makes the best most reliable one, and who do you suggest as the best installer, a larger chain company or a small private one?

I have a Viper remote start from Best Buy (about $300). I like it a lot. The remote seems to go through batteries a little faster than I would have thought, but it is a 2 way remote (lets you know that you vehicle actually got the signal to start/lock/unlock).

Mine works great, and is also an alarm made by Python. It was around $400 from Circuit City. I had them install it, lifetime warranty. No probs as of yet, and I've had it for 3 years......my batteries don't last long in the remote either, it just takes one AAA. It also gives me a toneback when the truck is started, or when alarm goes off.

lifetime warrenty is always a good thing, i am weary of those places tho because i have had stereo problems with both of those so i am a bit nervous with them touching anything. but if you guys have had that kind of luck i dont see why it would not be ok

I'm really happy with my Autopage RS1000. Bought it from Sonic Electronix and had my cousin help me install it (he is a GM Tech that installs remote starts, alarms, and performance equipment as a side business).

How do remote starters deal with glow plugs?

Most have either a timer you can set to wait for the clow plugs to warm up, or a wire you can hook up to the wait to start light to sense when it turns off.

On the 6.0 and 6.4L trucks there is no wire to tap into for the wait to start light, so you have to get a remote start with a glow plug delay timer.

can an installer use the panic button for the start? I have a e250 w/factory alarm. would sure be nice to hop in a defrosted/ac-d van early in the mourning ad after work.

If your vehicle is 2005 and up (possibly earlier models) you can get a Ford remote start installed at the dealer that replaces your two key fobs with nearly identical Ford fobs that have one extra button on them for the remote start. (Mine is being installed today - 200 series) What I liked about the Ford option is that you don't have the delay on your unlock/lock like you do with most remote starters. I'll let you know how well the Ford one works compared to my previous aftermarket remotes after I get it back today from the dealer.

I'm on my 5th remote start from Ziebart...it is a Pursuit series. Very reliable and lifetime warranty (will replace lost remotes at no charge). I have mine set for a 20 second glow plug warm up just to be safe. The product states a 1 mile range for two-way communications...it will go about half that, but how needs more?

angus67, the dealer called it the "200 Series" - not sure if that is the real name. It came with two new key fobs and I still have my other ones - all four work on the doors. The key fobs are apparently a new style, they have the lock, unlock, panic, start buttons and also an Aux 1 and Aux 2 button that you can hook up to a couple of additional remote options if you desire - not sure what I would use them for, but they are on it.

Probably best to call your dealer for pricing, things are always more expensive here in Canada as the dealers haven't figured out that the Cdn and US dollar are at par right now. I paid $525 plus tax for the install - so far it works great, I just haven't figured out how much distance it has compared to the wife's Astrostart. I rarely need to start the truck from a long distance, so it didn't really matter to me. What I didn't like about the aftermarket remote starts was the delay in opening the doors when you press the unlock button if you have the aftermarket remote programmed for your doors if you don't want to carry two keyfobs with you all the time.
