Blowing batteries

I have a dual battery setup on my Ford. I am not sure how it works, but it seems to be like a circuit. If I have one battery unhooked, nothing will work. Not even the stuff ran to the other battery. Awhile back the positive wire from the alternator grounded out on something and blew the driver-side battery. I found the grounded wire, fixed it, and all was good. Now that same side battery starts sizzling when it's hooked up. Even when the ignition/ac is off. I don't see any wires grounding out, and it is only happening to that battery, the other is just fine..

The volts are fine, 15 while running, 13 when off.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

-Dallas

What year, and type engine do you have? Is it a diesel?

It's a '75 F100, 390. Does anyone know what might be grounding out to only cause this on one battery?

Thanks guys,

-Dallas

It depends on how it's hooked up, but if both batteries are in parallel, then I would say the battery that is sizzling is bad, and the other battery is draining into it, causing the one battery to sizzle, and draining the other battery.

If you do not use both batteries(sounds like you don't) I would eliminate one of them.

I do use both batteries, I'm just not sure what things are ran to what battery. I think the important things are ran to the battery that is sizzling, and the misc. other stuff is ran to the other battery. I will try putting in a new battery today and see if it fixes it. The battery that is having the problems is pretty old.

Thanks for the help,

-Dallas

One thing to keep in mind is if both batteries are in parallel they must be the same size and age, Otherwise you will not get an equalization of the system

You didn't say why you needed both batteries? Most trucks do not need two batteries, and you could avoid the problem described by exidenick by just using one battery.

I have too many things on the truck to run to one battery. I had dual yellow tops in it, but they both decided to go out on me a little while ago.

Thanks for the help guys, I'm heading over to the shop now to check it out.

A dual battery setup is much more than hooking two batteries together. The topic has been covered fairly well on this site; use the search and you'll see. At a minimum I recommend you invest in an isolator so your screaming battery problem doesn't turn into a bomb. That's my suggestion.

It was not done incorrectly. This setup has been on the truck and working for over 5 years. It was done correctly. Something has to be grounding out, or the battery is just shot..? I didn't get a chance to throw a new battery in it yet, but I will get to it tonight.

Thanks,

-Dallas
