Which happens all the time. This is why it is important to select an air hammer that hammers at a slow rate of speed. Most are so fast that they are difficult to keep accurately pressed against the work.

Mine is an "IronForce by Campbell Hausfeld" aka $15.00 chinese special, but it has a built in air regulator. Seeing that an air hammer is a pretty darn simple air tool with few moving parts, it is hard for these things to ever break, other than that damn retaining spring (mine hasn't busted yet). Just buy something with a good warranty, or something cheap enough that a warranty never matters. And wear the proper safety gear!

I got a Harbor Freight heavy duty air hammer on sale 2 years ago. It came with like 10 chisels which seem a little soft but work ok. I paid $10 on sale and eventually bought a solid collar for it for about $15 on clearance at Lowes. Spent $30 on a Matco hammer bit. I use it a few times a month, I have made my money back and then some.
