Our 98 Ranger has a 4.0 engine/auto od, Nancy thinks it pretty good on gas, similar to our 84/2.8-V6/C4 we had. The 84 got around 27-8 on a trip at 110-115 kph, not sure about intown driving.
I don`t really know the gas mileage figures on this 98, it`s mostly running around town and it doesn`t seem to break us.

I doubt a sheet of plywood would fit between the wheel wells.
It`s not hard to make an overhead rack like I did for the 84 Ranger for hauling lengths of steel tubing.

Sherm, I think you can put cross braces across the box just above the wheel wells to carry those 4 foot widths. Not sure but I think the box actually has formed spots in the interior sidewalls to hold 2x4's for that purpose. My friend Rob (the guy with the Lightning and 69 Mach 1) has a Ranger for his daily driver and his
dad has had quite a few of them. That little 4.0 is quite the engine for reliability.

thanks guys. yeah i know that 4.0 is a heck of an engine, but i was thinking of going with the 2.3 5sp if i can find one. the fellow i bought my '83 from has a new one, reg cab, reg box, 2.3 5sp. he claims, and i repeat "claims" (i value his word) that he's getting about 30-32 in town and about 4o on the highway if he keeps it around 100km/h. that sounds sweet to me.

Thats pretty good mileage for a little truck, i would go for it!
I would rather get a little less mileage and go with a 4 liter engine over a 2.3.
The 2.3's as a general werent all that great.

i've heard good and bad about the 4, 3, and 2.3L engines. this truck would be specifically for the mileage and economy for a runabout, maybe a couple of sheets here and there as well as a few tools but nothing heavy, thus not needing the power.

We would never get 30-32 in town and not likey close to 40 on the highway but Nancy doesn`t drive alot and we do like the 4.0 power as well as this Ranger Supercab.

i suppose the pewer would be nice. another thing i like about the 2.3 5sp is you can pick up a new one for close to 14g's. that tweaks my silly switch!!

I`m sure the 2.3 would be fine, it`s nice to be able to buy a new one that reasonable and the fuel savings at today`s gas price is a real bonus.

I think they get pretty decent mileage but some people complain the newer rangers with 4x4 and 4.0l get the same as a 1/2 truck in the city

mine is a reg cab shrt box 2.3 5spd, mostly highway driving, but a littel bit of town im averaging around 30mpg. If im strictly on the highway, cruising in OD ill make 35, and thats 100-110......it tops out at about 120 without revving ti too high, Im real gently on mine, im sure it would go faster, but its older and I don't wanna increase the risk of exploding

Ive hauled a fair amount with mine, a full size pallet ( which i think is about 4 ft) doest quite fit between the wheelwells.

Be wary of 4.0s, from wht ive heard when I look at newer Rangers, they are good when new, but at higher mileage they cause a lot of headaches real fast, where as the 2.3 starts to make some noise but keeps on going

anyway, just my .02, if theres anything else ya wanna know bout me ranger just ask.

I had a '99 Explorer with the 4.0l auto and 4X4, it would get 27-28 mpg on the highway. Never did figure it out around town, but I loved the power of the 4.0l.
