tire size/wheel question

What would be the biggest tire I could put on a 79 Bronco with the stock white steel wheels? It is completely stock with no lift, but later when my funds get better im planning on a 4inch lift.

I believe you can fit 31-32" tires with minor rubbing on turns. After the lift, you should be able to put 35's on with some minor rubbing.

On the stock 7" wide wheels I would go no more than 9.5 or maybe 10.5 inches wide on the rubber. I think on a 79 you could fit 33x9.50 tires with out a lift.

I'm running 31X10.5X15's on my stock rims on my 78 with no lift. It is used mostly off road and pretty rough with lots of rust out on the rear wheel wells, but rubbing isn't a problem. It might be on be on good sheet metal if you were at full compression on the rear axle, but I doubt it.

I know this is different body style but my 83 bronc had 33x12.50 TSLs on it and minor rubbing on turns, no rubbing on the rear. and i wheeled the crap out of it.

gears

Thanks for the info, I was just lookin for a temporary fix until I have the money for larger aftermarket wheels. Or maybe I might just keep the stockers for awhile, since they are not pitted or rusty and still look good cleaned up with the stock hub caps to boot. What do you guys think would be a good gear ratio for the 79 Bronco with a stock rebuilt 351m that will later see everyday use and probably have a lift and 35in tires in its future?

4.56 gears work good for 35's. Their a little lower than stock. But I dont think you want them until you get the tires. (too low) especially if you dont have OD.

I agree completely with Hellrich. You can even use the stock ratio with 35s. I did, worked fine, and better mileage highway.

The problem with stock gears and 35's is you ware out first gear clutches. Also, if you have OD, it kind of becomes useless. (It will downshift if you even look at a hill) if your engine is strong enough to keep it turning in OD, you would get better millage as Stillakilla said. But in my case, the 302 couldnd do it. So then it would downshift and I would get terriable millage.

The 351M in it has very few miles on a complete rebuild, it seems like the guy that rebuilt it did a great job so it should have the power. It doesn't have OD. It wont be used much on the highway, mostly just short distances around town and a play toy, maybe a little highway use during the winter time if I need the 4wheel drive. I will let my two-wheel drive 79 Pickup with a 302 do highway duties as it has for a long time without any problems plus it gets 16mpg. I doubt the 351M gets any where close to that, lol.

I get close to that if I keep the speed to 60. In any case, if you go to the Mickey Thompson website, they have a tire fitment chart.

I have a 79 with 15x36.5 s on 10 inch rims with no lift . The tires do rub the radius arms on tight turns.
