rough idle VCT replacement
Ok I have posted few times regarding my trucks rough idle situation. The shop I took it too went through the recommended steps to fix the problem and noted they needed to replace the VCT. They have never had to fix this part on a ford f150 yet. The mechanic noted that after replacing and putting everything back together that their was actually a left and right vct. They replaced the left one, suppposedly the easier one to do. They noted thec heck engine light came back on but that the left side noise is gone and now there is the same noise on the right indicating the other side needs to be replaced. Does this sound normal? He said that they both work together and that if one doesnt work it will affect the other. Assuming I ran the truck with this problem for a month I guess I could have very well ruined the other side if it was compensating. I am clueless when it comes to engine mechanical situations. Does any of this sound normal? Am I on my way to replacing everything in my engine until the light goes off? Anyone been through this?
Ref both or one being bad. They do the same thing at the same time, just on different sides of the engine. The cam phase is controlled by oil pressure variation thru an electrically metered variable orifice on top of each head inside the valve cover. That's why engine oil viscosity is more critical on the 5.4 than on others. Delay your oil changes or use different grade of oil and it will affect the VCT operation. So if both were in the same engine for the same amount of time, they should have the same amount of wear on them, then the other one could be worn out as well.
It seems that unless the engine has low mileage, when they are brought to the dealer for a VCT issue, both get replaced at the same time.
Just my thoughts.
