Ford FINALLY came out of the stone age when they dumped the 4R100 for the 5R110...but they are still in the dark age when it comes to TRANSMISSIONS!!!...why they haven't developed a 6 speed AUTO to mate up to a 4.30 geared V10 is BEYOND me!...when they do...that will be the absolute perfect gas powered tow beast out there...FORD ARE YOU LISTENING...can you count to SIX as in GEARS!!!
I honestly do not what more gears. More gears equals more shifting, more heat and more parts. Sometimes less is more. I just want a tranny that will shift firm and last 250k.
The torqueshift is a 6spd already. I think its 4th and 5th gears that are very close together ratio wise. When cold it shifts using a different pattern.
Benefits when towing heavy on LONG STEEP grades would be where this extra gear would SHINE (IMO).
The RPM power band on the 2V (at least) is VERY NARROW. Fall below 3200RPMs when loaded for me to 17,000#'s combined and I'll be in 2nd and I'm betting on the 5 speed you'd easily be in 3rd. having gears spaced more closely without the large 'drop' in RPM when shifts would IMO actually make for LESS shifting. But alas...I'm living in the stone age with my 4R100...perhaps the 5speed is that much closer in gear 'steps'...but when I looked...I didn't think they were.
My problem is that if I 'lose' the 3200...in order to REGAIN the 3200...well that means running her up to near 5000RPMs in 2nd before shifting to 3rd in HOPES of continuing the pull at power...while you have a point about the costs...I think the costs would be minimal in the 'scheme' of things...I would personally welcome a 6sp as an improvement for towing as heavy as I do and beyond...but for simply putting around town...well I get your point...my truck is my tow vehicle...and I just feel having closer spaced gears would make for a better combo over an already great combo...but again that is just my opinion based on my tugging experiences with the stone aged 4R100.
I have a feeling that if they were to add another gear that it would probably be another overdrive gear to keep the RPM down and increase the corporate fleet fuel economy.
you are probably right...and that wouldn't meet MY desire for a 'better' match for pulling RPM wise with the V10.
The toy truck mfg's are making great strides with high output SB gassers and 6 speed trans...'proper' gearing is very misunderstood. FINAL DRIVE is a combination of tire size, axle ratio AND trans gears...
Proper pulling effeciency is achieved by having the proper FINAL DRIVE not just axle ratio...
Yup. I can't count the number of times I've driven a vehicle where the gear ratios are too far apart or don't make any sense at all. I wish it was like the video games where you can change your gear ratios with just 2 clicks.
Edit: Have you thought about an overdrive unit for your trans? Then you could have 1, 1 over, 2, 2 over, etc.
What are you comlaining about? My Super Duty came with a six speed. If yours didn't then you choose the wrong option.
I said auto!
Ron,
I've contemplated blowing the V10 just can't seem to want to part with 5 large...knowing how in maybe 5-7 years I'll likely have a DP coach and the Ex/TT will be gone...hmmm nitrous...hadn't thought about that one!!!
