Are you kidding me? VW? HEck, I can drop the engine, tear it down and then put it back together with a total of 3 wrenchs. I am talking about an air cooled VW, nothing new with all them vac lines etc. It was the VW that I cut my teeth on that gave me to confidence to say "This truck thing won't be so bad" So I know the feeling about losing motivation. I'm in a valley myself. But that is the way it goes...
One thing I do is not stay on one thing until I start to get in a slump. I go to something else for a while. And usually when I come back to what was causing me a problem is seem in a different light, and seems to go a lot easier. I still have a lot of different things started that I can very of to to keep me motivated. Most of all if the Oldies 50' 60' and 70's is on, and LOUD and I'm in the garage by myself I'm HAPPY.
Down side of the multiple projects suggestion is that I have been following it and I just got cited my by city for "inoperable car" in driveway because I have the cab off the truck sitting on a jig and the frame is elsewhere and slighlty in the yard while I fill the garage with a jaguar. But more than one reason to bust your knuckles is always good. Expensive but good.
Yah Minger a Volkswagon, 71 bus to be exact. Bringing it back from the dead. Has carb issues and the owner has money issues. I finally told him to come get it. I was so happy to see it go I got out my sanders and started stripping the Ranchero. I guess what really brought back my motivation is I put a deadline on the ranchero. I got temporary tags from DMV so I have till the end of Feb to get it road worthy, get it weighed, and get permanent plates for it.
Go work on a VW because you "have to". That ALWAYS restores my lost motivation to work on my projects. It also restores my resolve to never work on VWs again. Can you guess what just left my shop... Oh by the way I'm painting my Ranchero this weekend. Turn up the music and pick up a tool the motivation will return about 15-45 minutes into the job. Rich.
I skillfully mandaged to avoid spending roughly $3000 and a year of my precious truck time recently by convincing the little woman that she would get tons more enjoyment of tooling around town in a bitchin' 1965 Falcon than she would in the 67 VW Bug............Whew! Dodged that bullet. Sold the Bug project, bought the driver Falcon, little woman is happy (an amazing feat in itself) and I have time for my truck.......All in all, a great move on my part
Hey Bobby, a tip of a frosty beverage to you!! My little woman, said that when we get a new baby, we'll have to build the panel truck. I LOVE my wife!!!! There's no room in my pickup.
Seriously, back to the original post. That's why I love this place, there's lots of people goin through the same thing as you. We're kind of like a support group. We're the " Henry Ford Clinic" We're here for each other! I've been to some other forums, and this is by far the best!!!
You are So right Terry. This is the best site around. The tips you all give me broke the spell. I had a pretty good day on the 55 today. Got the drivers side window mocked up with Channel and regulator. It works well. Got the other door off and all of the cutting done ready to weld in the new channel tomorrow.
Thanks guys, I'm back!!!!
Cool man, Now just be ready to be supportive when one of us falls off the wagon, and gets discouraged. That's what I love about this place, is the support. The first time I went to the Supernats, in 1993 I came home and worked non stop on my 56 til I got it done. It took 2 years, but I did get it done. Of course it didnt hurt that my wife at the time couldn't stand me so I stayed in the garage all the time!! It's amazing what you can accomplish, when you dont want to go home!
I haven't worked on my 55 sence before Halloween. I got disgusted with Vintage Glass with there runaround with my one piece glass kit. And I use the word KIT loosely.
Now I have everything ( I Think) but have lost my motovation. I know some of you have had the same trouble. What did you do to get over it? I need to and want to get this thing going. But I can't get going myself.
Mine was this. I indulged in a Pint of my favorite Dark Ale from Trader Joe's & I said to my self, Self, you've procrastinated enough over re-pinning your door lock to work w/ your ignition key.
I then gathered up the Re-Keying Kit, took out the door lock & proceeded to do the dirty deed.
And I now have a One key set-up for my trucks door & ignition which works Perfectly.
Alot of good thoughts from the readinags. Often I get almost overwhelmed at all that I have to do on the truck. But like you said, today was a good day and feeling because I finnaly cleaned up the engine bay and undercariage. Now I can start thinking about the next task. Keep pumping us up. It keeps us going.
