Question What Axle do I have here?

Hey all,

I'm helping out a friend who runs a snow plow company. He has a 1990 F-250 4X4 that has a CRACKED front axle housing. We pulled the tag off, and called the dealership. They cant tell me what axle I have. The best they could do, is tell me is a 4.10 Ratio. I called a junkyard, and they said its either a SPICER 44 or 50... How do I tell the difference?

What is one of these things going to cost? Its a plow truck, so every day its down, its costing mucho money.

TIA

Billy

Question

Hey Billy,

What does the tag say?
What does the sticker on the drivers doorjamb say?
like FAWR or axle code?
What's the VIN?

Thanks,
Jim

The dealership is right. It could be either. If it's an extended cab, it definitely has a Dana 50.

Here are pics of both:

<a href="http://s61.photobucket.com/albums/h48/andymilleville/?action=view&current=d50-60hub.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h48/andymilleville/d50-60hub.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://s61.photobucket.com/albums/h48/andymilleville/?action=view&current=D44hub.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h48/andymilleville/D44hub.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The Dana 50 axle (first pic) will fill the wheel opening a lot more than a 44 will.

But since you're using this truck for commercial plowing, you need a Dana 60. You will just run into this problem again with anything else. TTB axles are simply not as strong as a monobeam 60.

The VIN, door sticker, nor the tag are going to tell you what the axle is. I'm not sure about a 90 but I know the later model F250s have a Dana 50 up front. Someone will correct me here if I'm wrong.

EDIT: Whoops andy beat me to it.

So whats the deal with the "spicer".... Is that just a division of Dana?

I'll take a pic the next time I go over there (next week). Its a pretty wicked break. The housing broke just to the side (drivers) of the pumpkin.... Aparently one of the drivers hit something...

Just for grins and giggles...

If the axle is a 44, whats involved in swapping for a 50... or 60...

Thanks all

Billy

Dana Spicer is the full name of the company. These axles are almost always referred to as Dana ___'s or D___'s, I've never heard of someone referring to it as a Spicer 44, although I suppose it would be the same thing

Don't bother swapping to a 50, it's still a twin traction beam and won't offer much improvement for plowing over the D44. If I were you I'd definitely swap to a 60, but be prepared to pay top dollar

Paying top dollar is NOT in the plan... so another 44 or 50 is the ticket... the body is rotten, so it only has to last another year or two... My budy wants it up to be a spare when one of the "regular" trucks goes down...

Thanks

In that case, you should be able to pick up a Dana 50 from a junkyard for fairly cheap. Easy swap, you can do it in a few hours.

Just make sure you get a Dana 50 - get one from an extended cab truck if you're unsure - and make REALLY sure it has the same gear ratio as the old one.

A dana 60 swap usually ends up running about $1500 by the time you're done.

So if its origionally a Dana 44, going to a Dana 50 wont be any trouble? I just want to make sure there shouldnt be any hidden hicups.

Thanks

I've never done it, so I couldn't say. It's not a real popular swap either, so I doubt you'll find many write-ups.

The only difference that I can think of would be the pinion might be a little longer. You may need a slightly shorter front driveshaft, and then again you may not.

Also pay attention to the way the calipers are mounted. Ford used a couple different mechanisms over the years, and if you want to use your calipers you'll want to make sure they interchange. You definitely do not want to use junkyard calipers. The heavier duty dual piston ones on F-250's can get pricey to replace.

Not on a 1990 they aren't. Disc brakes have been standard since the mid 70's.
