I went over things pretty careful taking all your thoughts in. I also think it had some crap in the fuel system from running Startron and maybe it blew through. Not to good with fuel injection (I like 70's motors) and I don't have a code thingy (I'm gonna' get one) so I had to wing it a bit, but I found a definte problem and think that was it. The 2nd cylinder in the front was making some clicking and other sporatic sounds and engine was rough somewhat, found the spark plug loose.
When I got the truck it had all the original plugs completely burned up and rusted in place, the second plug was really tough and the new one didn't go in so smooth for me, I pulled it and it was all fouled. I cleaned it, lubed it and reinstalled, went in much better and truck is running well......for now.
I test drove it and it gained some power plus didn't hint at stalling, engine totally still when idle in Drive. THANKS!!
good luck with your problem. could you let us know if infact it worked. I'm having what sounds to be the same problem on my I6 but i've done AIC, plugs, injector service ,throttle body service and tested EGR. still stalling everytime i stop. THANKS
Bucc, here's the skinny. Since I worked on the problem it's been much better but there still is a glitch I'm trying to identify. The truck used to just stall, I have used it a couple of times runnung great, tonight at a light it started coughing and wanting to stall and releasing some smelly off ignition type smoke, making me think still a glitch in the spark module thingy, whatever it's called that goes into distributer. I'm going to pull it clean everything and put it back, if it still coughs again I'll replace it. Also I'm going to get a little better into the gas lines and stuff, what I really want to do is remove the dual tanks and switch valve crap and go with one new tank and pump and it will probably run for 10 more years.
I lost track in this thread..(see how one jerk screws things up)
Troubleshooting basics...try to carefully evaluate and assess.
Pick a starting point, i.e. pick a system to trouble shoot, and then only change one thing at a time. Anotherwards, don't change plugs, wires, distributor, and computer all at the same time.
IMPORTANT...start cheap!
You must pull codes, your truck may be EEC-IV ( I might be wrong)some 96 may have had the same engine control as 95, 94, 93 etc.
Carefully check codes and post here. You will have codes. This is the best computer system ever stuck in a truck...if it stalls there has to be a reason.
Simple stuff, like dirty manifold, dirty IAC, as mentioned, broken vac lines, rusted or missing vac reservoirs.
There are solenoids that control the EGR, they go bad, and they are fairly cheap.
If you troubleshoot get a vacuum gauge with vac pum[p 30 bucks, by some seafoam and plumbers acid brush, and if you like, buy some aerosol seafoam( good for cleaning the throttle plate. I recommend this stuff cause it is great to clean the intake and IAC,
Remember, try not to spend money on parts unless u r sure.
